I went with Genesis - a long time favourite band of mine.

I have definite and set ideas why I'd choose this band over alot of prog rock bands from the 70's... one of them is that it never seemed like their music was vacant - it always seemed to have a purpose. Each part of a long suite or complicated piece seemed to serve the song well and draw it together as a cohesive statement. With a few notable exceptions, you never found yourself bored or meandering through a Genesis album from the Seventies - it all felt bristling, energetic snd meaningful...

I honestly find myself drifting away in the space and openness of a Floyd album - I need the engaging nautre of Genesis' music to carry me through my prog rock experience...

I love Rush, but they're both underrated and overrated. Overrated because they seem to be the most popular prog band next to Floyd and I just don't think they touch Yes, Genesis, KC and the more lesser known bands. Plus Rush fanboys are super annoying.

Underrated because they do deserve a lot of credit they don't get, not only for their tremendous amount of talent, they were one of the few good North American prog bands, and they helped introduce a lot of people (including me) to prog.

I never really learned anything at all about Rusn until I moved to the US - they really didn't have a huge profile in Australian circles, and I have barely heard any of their music, I must admit - all i know is that Geddy Lee's voices is kinda reedy / whiney...

Boo Boo, why don't you close the thread, and create it again with more, and more accurate poll options? What's the point in being a mod if you don't want to use the power?

boo boo 01-02-2009 07:06 PM

Eh ok, I'll do dat.

If you do, perhaps you should leave out Pink Floyd with a little explanation as to why in the OP. Then, the poll is more interesting and we can flame the fancypants who complain about PF not being in the list.

Nah, I'll add Floyd, but what about Roxy Music?

That's a big grey area right there.

Comus 01-03-2009 06:58 PM

I would not add Roxy Music.

Molecules 01-03-2009 07:34 PM

never thought i'd say this but ELP are coming close to taking top spot just for 'Tarkus'...

yeah and why are Roxy Music there? Unless my ignorance of their early stuff is really missing something proggy

scottsy 01-03-2009 08:02 PM

Their early stuff is sorta offbeat, whackyand has a prog element to it, but I don't think its prog rock per se... Kinda like the Church - they have prog rock leanings, but they're more space rock / accoustic rock than prog...
