I started with Frances the Mute. But I think Deloused... would be just as good for a starter album. They're both more than enough to decide whether you'll like them enough.

The common distaste for the Volta is usually an issue with the vocals, which in later albums got more effect oriented and higher and higher and higher. Some people come to find them annoying after a while. Deloused... definitely is the album with the least amount of effects on the vocals, and the music and vocals combination is very powerful, but the same can be said for their entire repertoire, I think.
