Been listening to the new album, it's pretty good.

Vedamalady is amazing, my favorite track by far.

Does it still follow the style of the last 3 albums? I guess I would still listen to it, but I'm not sure it will impress. That whole style was starting to get old. The album art definitely has a different vibe, so I'm hoping that is a good sign.

For me it's Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sounds, the song is brilliantly written. The album like all has it's moments where you know it's Mars Volta, intense drums, falsetto singing, and crazy guitar riffs, but the vocals are a bit different, or at least they sound to me. I thought they had a guest vocalist on the album but was proven wrong when I searched it up. My first listen, I'll be honest and say I didn't really like it and questioned whether or not to even finish it. I kept listening to it, amazing is all I can say to describe it.

I think Cedric and Omar realized their style was getting old, so they mixed it up enough to where this album sounds markedly different from their previous albums. Is it good, though? I'm still deciding...

on interviews they say its just more minimalistic, which i agree with. and they cut their live members down in half which speaks to that alot.

anyone listen to omar's side projects? cryptomnesia with el gruop nuevo is my favorite, it has zach hill from hella on drums

Cryptomnesia is awesome but It really feels like a TMV album since Cedric is all over it. I'd probably put some of his other albums up as examples of how awesome his other stuff is - Apocalypse inside of an orange, calibration, Ciencia de los Inútiles, and Xenophanes being the obvious choices. I also enjoy the Lydia lunch and Damo Suzuki colabs but they're both acquired tastes in my book so I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who isn't down for some difficult listening.

ive got a ton of omar vinyls (for some reason they're easier to find than the mars volta (which i only have 2).
i like "absence makes you grow fungus" too reminds me more of early mars volta where they still had a post-hardcore tinge to their music

what about defacto? personally i think its nothing special, some cool acid jazz type lounge music. but i did like seeing cedric play drums

I've really been enjoying the new album since release, seems to blend the styles from the last few albums in a successful way.

"The Malkin Jewel" scared me a bit when I first heard the clips prior to the release, I think it threw a lot of people off. I think it's the worst track on the album, by a considerable amount. Empty Vessels, Dyslexicon and Lapochka are my favorites.

Overall a solid release, not disappointed at all. I wasn't disappointed in Octahedron either, fwiw.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

In Absentia and Molochwalker are my favorites off the new album. Octohedron is good too but took a while to grow on me, I prefer the wild chaotic Mars Volta.

Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez unveils new band Bosnian Rainbows' first song (listen at bottom of page)

I'm not impressed with the song, probably mostly because the female singer's voice doesn't appeal to me. It's otherwise a pretty straight-forward song, a bit weird for Omar right now. The album is done and they plan to release it later this year.

But there are some other interesting tidbits in the article:

Quote:
Rodriguez-Lopez, who announced in late 2012 that he and At The Drive-In frontman Cedric Bixler had placed The Mars Volta on hiatus...
Quote:
Rodriguez-Lopez also spoke about Bixler and revealed that the singer is currently working on his debut solo album, which will mainly consist of acoustic.
Quote:
I’m really excited to hear another side of him and to work on music without me. He’s composing all the music, playing all the instruments, literally doing everything himself, rather than just singing over the top of my songs.
