I take it you never heard Hear My Train 'a Comin', or Red House, or Angel (acoustic)? As for calling Clapton slow-hand... see Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad off Derek and the Domino's Layla album. The the fast version of Layla... which I'm not exactly sure what album that's off of, but. |
it's not that hendrix couldn't play slow, it's the groove for 'cocaine' runs counter to everything the experience or band of gypsies put behind him. it's like missing a half beat or something, it's not bad, it's just not funky enough for hendrix.
hendrix was most definitely headed towards the funk before he died. calling clapton slowhand is not a diss in the least, he's been called slow hand since the 70s, hell, it's the album 'cocaine' is on hahaha. either way i've always taken the title slowhand to be in reference to clapton's long slow bends that always sound so smooth. i'd listen to cream's version of 'crossroads' to hear clapton burning. the derek and the dominoes album also featured duane allman doing a fair amount of guitar work. |
I could see Hendrix headed towards funk, definitely. The groove for Cocaine does run the aforementioned way, though whose to say ya can't be original with covers? Or is it that the public percieves Cocaine as one of those songs that should never change it's original groove?
Not saying it's a diss, I'm just saying I've heard him play pretty impressively fast as well. The term "slowhand" as you describe it with the beautiful bends and whatnot can be beautifully illustrated I think on "River of Tears". Allman was also a great guitarist, in my opinion. |

mind you jj cale didn't write the song until 5 years after hendrix died and clapton didn't release his version 1980. |
Hendrix's All Along the Watcher is great... though Bob's is also extremely admirable, in my opinion. (But I'm blatantly biased ;))
Despite his being 6 feet under, I think Hendrix would've done some interesting things with Cocaine. |
