Depeche Mode - are they GREAT in your book or not?

What do you think?

Key 11-15-2018 03:50 PM

In my book? Yes. As a whole? Probably?

Janszoon 11-15-2018 09:51 PM

I don’t know if I’d consider them all caps level great but I like them a lot.

MicShazam 11-16-2018 06:49 AM

Yeah, I could go with great. Not greatest, but great.

I like most of their albums and several of them are very strong.

They even still got it. Spirit was a pretty damn good album.

Lilja 11-17-2018 01:18 AM

I think they are a great band and one of the top synth acts of the 80s. With their latest album, they really sound pissed off with songs like "Where's the Revoultion" and it sounds much more raw their their prevoius albums. But they really have evolved as a band if you compare this music to say "I just can't get enough".

I hope to see them live one day. Dave Gohan is such a showman in terms of his whole stance on stage.

MicShazam 11-17-2018 01:26 AM

"Gohan"?

Depeche Mode - are they GREAT in your book or not?

Definitely a Yes!!:thumb:

No one else has combined electro/synth with guitar as creatively/successfully as D.M., which also combines rock/pop/dance. Also a phenominal live act w/Dave Gahan being great frontman!-see Devotional tour (it's on youtube-don't know how to include in text:confused::o:)-staging and lighting by Andrew Corbijn other-worldly!

I actually was surprised to find them under pop forum, esp. since I've seen D.M. posts/threads in alt/indie, but, I know there are plenty of bands who crossover (and they're usually the bands I favor...love genre-defying, or blending)

S'kay-whatever. I'm not writing anything offensive and if longtime members' don't understand=NBD! Plus, maybe somebody else who's new will understand and be glad to find that something.:thumb: Stranger things've happened.

Zhanteimi 12-30-2018 04:18 AM

Violator is "unassailable".

MicShazam 12-31-2018 06:49 PM

They've got only 2-3 disappointing albums. The rest is good to great.

Unitron 12-31-2018 07:24 PM

Only album I've heard in full and own is Violator, which is pretty good.

Never gotten around to hearing much of their other stuff.

Key 12-31-2018 08:34 PM

Violator is indeed great.

rostasi 12-31-2018 09:10 PM

Yup. I once did a nearly 45 minute live remix of Enjoy the Silence.
A guy named Randall taped over the cassette copy of it.
Really pissed me off. Still wish I had it.

For all D.M. Violator fans:

Best live: Devotional tour

"Enjoy"...

****ing Randall.
What a vandal.

Black Celebration, Some Great Reward, Ultra, Exciter, Delta Machine, Spirit. All of those are among my favorites and it's hard to pick. Songs of Faith and Devotion is also good, but I need to listen to it more (it was one of the last DM albums I got my hands on).

Smithdude 01-05-2019 10:00 AM

Depeche Mode is amazing!
They were the first of their kind of music, they are so unique and dark and awesome!

My favorite album of theirs is Playing the Angel.

Reina 01-06-2019 03:42 AM

DM is pop?

OT: They're great, I think they've polished their sound a lot over the years and have evolved with the times.

Zhanteimi 01-06-2019 03:44 AM

They're certainly a synthpop band.

That's really tough, but after Violator; my D.M. lineup:
1. Violator
2. Music For the Masses
3. Songs of Faith and Devotion

Also, for D.M. fans, check out this band:
(I can't pull up all, b/c some are blocked/deleted in my Country, so I chose one song at random) - Also, Smithdude started a D.M. devoted thread.

youdoofus 01-16-2019 06:59 AM

yep, they helped make the genre and time period not suck

Here's great collaboration with Alison Goldfrapp on Ocean from Goldfrapp's lp Silver Eye, Deluxe version. Their vocals alone, are gorgeous; together...ethereal::clap:

Tlfab4 02-01-2019 03:57 PM

I like them.

Fantomas72 09-18-2020 11:46 AM

I grew up listening to some of DM classic albums ' Music For The Masses ' , 'Violator' , ' Song Of Faith and Devotion ' and 'Ultra' are my favourite !
The band have been highly influential in the electronic dance music scene, especially synthpop, techno and trance.

SGR 09-18-2020 03:29 PM

Yes they're great. Not incredible. Not decent. But great.

Neapolitan 09-19-2020 08:24 PM

Depeche Mode wrote one, maybe two songs that are great, but overall they're other stuff ranges anywhere from boring to OK, it's listenable. Their other stuff just doesn't pique my curiosity. They don't impress me enough to want to sit through a whole album by them. I do listen to bands that remind me of DM, but still that's not enough for me to want to go back and listen to any DM. So in my book they are not great. They are just in the middle, there are other bands better than them, and other bands worse than them.

Tristan_Geoff 09-19-2020 09:19 PM

Top 50 group

Love their darkwave tracks, big influence on my VST design

Fantomas72 10-21-2020 08:55 AM

The 20 Best Depeche Mode Songs: Critic's Picks by billboard !:)

In Depeche Mode's 40-year history, the synth-rock group has tackled countless subjects across the ordinary and taboo, including suicide, politics, romance, greed, LGBT rights, xenophobia, personal insecurity, religious zealotry, sexual freedom, drug addiction, and more. Have you ever been frustrated and alive? Depeche Mode has a song for you.

Run the tally, and we might have to all agree Violator is the band's greatest release. “Enjoy The Silence” comes from that 1990 collection of genius, and it's truly the epitome of Depeche Mode's greatness. Gahan's performance is strong but tender, the melodies ache and sing with joy. The beat is hard, relentless, and perfect for dancing. Its message is ironic, in that words could so well describe the magic of silence. When love is real, you don't need words. It's something you feel. A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, and so on, and so forth.

1. Depeche Mode – “Enjoy The Silence”
2. Depeche Mode – “Personal Jesus”
3. Depeche Mode – “People Are People”
4. Depeche Mode – “Policy of Truth”
5. Depeche Mode – “Everything Counts”
6. Depeche Mode – “It’s No Good”
7. Depeche Mode – “John The Revelator”
8. Depeche Mode – “Strangelove”
9. Depeche Mode – “Just Can’t Get Enough”
10. Depeche Mode – “Shake The Disease”
11. Depeche Mode – “I Feel You”
12. Depeche Mode – “Never Let Me Down Again”
13. Depeche Mode – “Dream On”
14. Depeche Mode – “Heaven”
15. Depeche Mode – “Where’s The Revolution”
16. Depeche Mode – “Walking In My Shoes”
17. Depeche Mode – “A Question of Lust”
18. Depeche Mode – “Master & Servant”
19. Depeche Mode – “Waiting For The Night”
20. Depeche Mode – “Blasphemous Rumors”

jadis 07-12-2022 11:15 AM

IMO Violator is a very good album but its late-80s production sounds much more dated today than those harder-edged early singles like Everything Counts, People Are People, Blasphemous Rumors etc.

World In My Eyes is a great, great single though

Would've been a great band on the strength of those four songs alone, but there's also Master and Servant, One Caress, Pipeline, Walking In My Shoes, Shake The Disease and many more...

They have great songs on practically all the albums (haven't heard the couple of the more recent ones though)

jadis 07-12-2022 04:17 PM

Vince Clark is a really good pop songwriter. The double act he had then established with Allison Moyet, Yaz or Yazoo or whatever it's called, had a few good songs too

music_collector 07-12-2022 06:33 PM

I've been a fan of the band for years. Songs of faith and devotion, and Ultra are solid releases. Dave has a great voice.

Trollheart 07-13-2022 10:54 AM

No they're not. Not to me. They're dreary, boring and soulless. well you did ask.

The Batlord 07-13-2022 11:12 AM

I thought the British liked dreary, boring, and soulless.
