When did melodic death metal happen? Mid-to-late nineties? When death metal was already stale and going nowhere? And how often do true blue death metal bands start sounding like In Flames to make money?

I used the wrong word. Gothenburg melodic d.m. brought shame upon entire death-metal sub-genre.

Because it isn't death metal. Neither musically, nor aesthetically nor lyrically.

So? I don't listen to much melodic DM, but the fact that they share most of a name and one evolved from the other doesn't in any way affect Death or Suffocation' reputations.

Yes it does. I don't want to listen to any death metal now, after I've learned that it has been in bed with melodic death metal. Ewww...

Are you comparing Swedish to American? Because they were founded on completely different bases of sound and influences. How can that be considered an embarrassment? I think it more like an evolution occurring in different areas.

Just FYI, melodic death metal is not referred to as "Swedish death metal", as "Swedish death metal" is a legit form of real death metal that predates melodic death metal. Mostly from Stockholm.
