Top 40 Pop
Dream Pop Alt Pop (90's) Indie Pop (whether this means artists like LAKE or artists like Vampire Weekend should probably be decided, though I guess it'd make sense to have one for Twee Pop to differentiate) Motown Pop Rock (maybe more focus on 60's stuff like Beach Boys and Beatles) Avant-Pop Pop Rap Traditional Pop (i.e. Sinatra or Ink Spots) Electropop New Wave Pop/New Jack Swing Noise Pop Oh, and yes I'd be down for it. Can't say I'd be great making the lists but I'm happy to participate. |
Thanks. I'll think about it a little more over the next few days.
What about Jpop/Kpop? It really isn't my thing but I don't think we should look it over either. This might be the thread that fills the void left in me by the Torture Chamber.
Anybody else interested in this? I'll try and compile a list of genres tonight and maybe a few suggested 10's.

I'm in. I don't know much about Pop, but why not?
Batlord's in.
Can't even tell me to my face? Pussy.
IF I can squeeze it in to my mighty workload I'd be interested in supporting this. Don't know a huge amount about pop but I'd be happy to take part.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/lowres.cart...-mfln4_low.jpg Ha ha! Joke's on them! Spoiler for the truth:
Good stuff TH. Hopefully yourself and others are turned onto some great music as a result of it.
BTW, I definitely need help with this when it comes to 'definitive' lists in some areas. I have generally avoided Pop music until the last year or two so my personal lists wouldn't include many of those that are generally be considered to be 'classics'. It's a group process anyway, so I'm sure we will get there. And just so you know, Frostbite by Kitty is the winner of the thread. So... spoiler alert or whatever. |
Just so long as this doesn't turn into a hipster elitist bull**** thread with twelve boring indie pop lists. Nothing against dream pop, but I'm convinced that it's the genre that hipster douchebags name drop when they want to sound like they listen to something other than Arcade Fire.
I'll not allow it.
Let's not make this take forever to start like the rock survivor thread. I'm gonna work on at least one more list. We should plan on having this done and ready to go by next month. So do you think Indie Pop should include alt pop stuff like Vampire Weekend, or refer to Twee Pop groups? Or should they be separate lists entirely?
Noise Pop
Sleigh Bells- Treats Joanna Gruesome- Weird Sister Jesus and the Mary Chain- Psychocandy Flaming Lips- Clouds Taste Metallic Ride- Nowhere Yo La Tengo- I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One Hum- Downward is Heavenward Tripping Daisy- Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb Boris- Attention Please Dinosaur Jr- You're Living All Over Me |

I don't plan on putting up too many lists, since I'm mostly dedicated to the rock one. BUt I'll be glad to help wherever necessary. So I'll put one up for psychedelic pop. I'll wait for more lists to come before I consider others. 1. Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour 2. Love - Forever Changes (amazing album) 3. Bee Gees - 1st 4. Beach Boys - Surf's Up 5. Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle 6. Monkees - Headquarters 7. Kaleidoscope - Tangerine Dream 8. Donovan - Mellow Yellow 9. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 10. The Kinks - Something Else by the Kinks Sorry if anyone feels that I'm uploading too many lists for these. I'm just hyped to be having a good discussion for once in a while. I kind of obsess over genres. EDIT: Sorry! I have one more I'd like to submit. Pop Soul 1. Laura Nyro - More Than a New Discovery 2. Jackson 5 - ABC 3. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis 4. The Temptations - Gettin' Ready 5. Diana Ross - Diana Ross 6. Amy Winehouse - Back in Black 7. Simply Red - Stars 8. Earth Wind & Fire - Faces 9. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life 10. Ehhg. I feel dirty writing this one...
Emo-Pop My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade Jimmy Eat World- Bleed American Fall Out Boy- Under the Cork Tree Dashboard Confessional- The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most Saves the Day- Through Being Cool All American Rejects- Move Along Taking Back Sunday- Tell All Your Friends Blink-182- blink-182 (2003 S/T) Say Anything- ...Is a Real Boy The Used- The Used Now that I think about it some of these are actually decent. Jimmy, TBS, Saves the Day, and Blink in particular. The rest, not so much. |
I really can't offer any lists, since as I say pop for me was pretty much something I looked down my nose at when a teen/young adult and since I got into prog, metal, AOR etc I've given it a little more appreciation but in general know next to nothing about what goes where. So I'll just sit back and listen to albums as they come up and vote but I'm afraid I won't be any help compiling lists.
On the bright side, there won't be any "that's-not-a-rock-opera!" style fumes and rants like over at the other thread. ;) I would suggest though Goofle seeing if you can drag in the pop princess on this. I reckon MissPopTart would be a very valuable and knowledgeable resource to have. |
I'll try to make one or two more lists. Feeling burnt out from all the ones I've been doing recently though.
Country-Pop Taylor Swift- Fearless Toby Keith- Unleashed Zac Brown Band- The Foundation Carrie Underwood- Some Hearts Garth Brooks- Man Against Machine Rehab- Graffiti the World Brad Paisley- Wheelhouse Florida Georgia Line- Here's to the Good Times Eric Church- Chief Blake Shelton- Based on a True Story |

These survivor threads are becoming a ****ing plague. ;)

Everyone wants to be me.
At least, everyone in their wrong minds.

Let's say we agree on Psychedelic Pop, what would we change about JGuy's list?
1. Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour 2. Love - Forever Changes m 3. Bee Gees - 1st 4. Beach Boys - Surf's Up 5. Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle 6. Monkees - Headquarters 7. Kaleidoscope - Tangerine Dream 8. Donovan - Mellow Yellow 9. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 10. The Kinks - Something Else by the Kinks Personally I would add an Animal Collective (MPP probably fits the bill most) and of Montreal album to rep this millennium. Probably Congratulations by MGMT as well if I'm greedy. |
Well, can't Animal Collective and of Montreal fit in Avant-Pop, and MGMT in alt-pop?
I would say that those would fit as well, however, more modernized "psychedelic pop" is more neo-psychedelia than anything. So I guess Flaming Lips should leave, since it's pretty neo.
Let's not get caught up in specific differentials between specific differentials in a sub genre. I'm not sure how these usually work anyway? Should I change the thread title to "Pop Album Survivor: Psychedelic Pop", then solidify the list?
Voting after we kinda agree on the 10? |
Most of these other lists decide all the lists on ten before going into the first battle, so I think we should do that first. If you want to update the OP with the lists we've already done and the ones we need to do it'd help us out a lot.
Yeah I'll be doing that. But I'd rather we focus on one genre at a time. So if a few people wanna have their say on Psychedelic Pop, let's get it going.
I'm good if you are.
Only replacement I'd make is Flaming Lips, as I've said. But if no one minds, I'm fine with it. It was a quick job, anyway, but if people like it, cool.
Synth Pop
1. Depeche Mode - Violator 2. Pet Shop Boys - Behavior 3. Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine 4. Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair 5. New Order - Power Corruption and Lies 6. The Human League - Dare 7. Eurythmetics - Sweet Dreams Are Made of This 8. Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) 9. The Knife - Silent Shout 10. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor |
Shaking the Habitual is The Knife's magnum opus (so far). Carry on.
