Lady Gaga? She'd get voted off way too quickly. Plus, she's horrible. SHe has a good singing voice, but most of the time she's not even singing. I abhor Bad Romance. Why not replace it with... Black Cherry by Goldfrapp?

Trollheart 01-20-2016 09:39 AM

Would it be an idea (or too much trouble) to maybe throw in decade-specific cats? Like, I don't know, 80s Synthpop, 90s synthpop etc? No? Carry on then, I'll be over here listening to LDR...:dj:

I think that Gaga album is pretty fantastic personally, and one that surely commands a place on the list due to her magnitude? And I did consider Goldfrapp, but I chucked in a few personal favourites instead. Happy to negotiate a trade.

I wouldn't mind that idea actually TH. They are almost different genres when you think about it, even if some albums released in different decades will sound similar.

I'll update the OP tomorrow when I get back to my computer.

If we're keeping off perfectly good trash pop then I'm out. And "Bad Romance" is one of the greatest pop songs of all time.

Goofle 01-20-2016 10:10 AM

I tried making a trash pop list, but I'd rather put deserving albums in their more aligned genre. Dance-Pop, for example, is likely to include some trashy goodness.

JGuy Grungeman 01-20-2016 10:24 AM

Dance Pop should at least have Emotion by Carly Rae Jespen.

Goofle 01-20-2016 10:30 AM

Dance-Pop will be the toughest to narrow down for sure. My two favourite pop albums would come under that category (unless I squeeze Kitty in somewhere else).

The Batlord 01-20-2016 10:53 AM

Alright, we're gonna have to have a talk about Madonna. I was just trying a dance pop list and realized that many of her classic albums are kind of hard to pigeon hole. I was about to put down Ray of Light, then I remembered what it actually sounded like, and stopped. Then out of curiosity I looked at the genre classifications on RYM and got: "Pop, Downtempo , Trip Hop, Electronic, Vocal Trance, Ambient Pop".

The **** am I supposed to do with that? Not to mention other oddballs like Erotica and American Dream.

JGuy Grungeman 01-20-2016 12:50 PM

I'll take a crack at it.

1. Madonna 0 Ray of Light
2. Michael Jackson - Bad
3. Pet Shop Boys - Introspective
4. Janet Jackson - Control
5. Carly Rae Jespen - Emotion

Well, I have half a list.

Goofle 01-30-2016 03:12 AM

3. of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
4. Beach Boys - Surf's Up
5. Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle
6. Monkees - Headquarters
7. Kaleidoscope - Tangerine Dream
8. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
9. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

Also, let's have some more list suggestions and requested additions to already made lists.

Pet_Sounds 01-30-2016 07:37 AM

Surf's Up over Pet Sounds?

Kaleidoscope

Tristan_Geoff 01-30-2016 08:25 AM

Avant-Pop, Pop Rap, and Indie Pop still need to be drafted out. I know you'll want Kitty in one of these but I'm not familiar enough to place her in any list.

Tristan_Geoff 01-30-2016 08:12 PM

Oh and thanks for giving us plenty of enough time to listen, appreciate that.

Pet Sounds is already represented in the rock one. I avoided duplicates.

Do we want to do this already? We still need to balance out the rock.

I know **** all about the Beach Boys, but since these are two entirely separate threads, I'd say it's not a crime to use the same albums at times. And Pet Sounds is simply too highly regarded to be swept aside just because of another thread.

I'm not trying to keep singling you out, but this does seem to be a case that needs to be rectified.

JGuy Grungeman 01-31-2016 08:27 AM

Still, I wouldn't say Pet Sounds is a very psychedelic album. I'm super into psychedelic music, but Pet Sounds doesn't feel the same way or sound the same way at all. I'd say it fits more into sunshine pop, which is less drugged and more cheery.

Goofle 01-31-2016 10:36 AM

Pet Sounds can go in whatever category you want. Just not this one since it's already started.

Tristan_Geoff 02-01-2016 08:55 PM

3 down. Loving these so far.

Goofle 02-05-2016 10:05 AM

Bumpadybump

Tristan_Geoff 02-05-2016 03:02 PM

Like 3-4 left. Will have votes ready by next week (hint; Monkees are going down!)

Tristan_Geoff 02-08-2016 05:25 PM

Monkees
Zombies
Kaleidoscope
Beatles (even as much as I love the album)

Pet_Sounds 02-08-2016 05:28 PM

Oh, we vote four off?

Monkees
Zombies
Kaleidoscope
Flaming Lips

I would suppose so.

Goofle 02-09-2016 01:07 PM

Monkees
Kaleidoscope
Animal Collective
Kinks

Aloysius 02-09-2016 04:50 PM

Will there be a wildcard list for stuff that doesn't fit in elsewhere? If so could we include: xtc - Engish Settlement? It seems a shame to leave out xtc completely. I'm digging the psychedelic pop list btw, need a few more listens before I vote.

Aloysius 02-12-2016 04:00 AM

Zombies
Monkees
Flaming Lips
Animal Collective

Goofle 02-12-2016 07:09 AM

If we ever get to the end I guess a wild card list isn't a bad idea.

GD 02-14-2016 03:57 PM

Mind if I join?

Monkees
Kinks
Kaleidoscope
Flaming Lips

Goofle 02-14-2016 04:28 PM

I don't actually know what happens now. Do we order the rest? Average best wins?

Tristan_Geoff 02-14-2016 07:48 PM

I think you tally up the votes and the one with the most is out. Then a new round starts (lasting a few days at most) until all but one remain.

Goofle 02-14-2016 08:53 PM

I'd prefer it if we just voted for the best three, and did it that way.

I'm saying that's how it's done from now on.

Pet_Sounds 02-15-2016 04:16 AM

I'll have to change my votes then.

Goofle 02-15-2016 05:00 AM

No worries. I think it's just a quicker way of getting through it.

TechnicLePanther 02-15-2016 08:04 AM

You're going to have to re-announce the battle now, or no one will vote. Also, can you explain the best three thing with a little more depth? Perhaps the albums with no votes are out? We can then switch it to two, and then one? But even then, we'll be left with multiple albums. I'm just not sure exactly how it would work.

Also, why don't we have a Jangle Pop list? I could probably put it together. It might fit better into Rock Album Survivor, but if you guys want to have it here, that would be cool as well.

EDIT- Actually, I suppose we could fit Jangle Pop into both Alt Pop and Indie Pop.

Goofle 02-15-2016 10:59 AM

I am just here as a organiser and trying to keep some order, if you want to make lists feel free to do so. Also suggest any edits you want.

After a bit of consideration, I think maybe we would be better off ordering the lists ourselves from 1-10. #1 gets 10 points, #2 gets 9 points etc. Tally up the totals and publish the overall ranking and winner.

Thoughts on that system?

TechnicLePanther 02-15-2016 02:26 PM

Sounds good to me.

I've only participated in a couple of survivor threads here, but I can definitely see why the 'survivor' format has been popular. Because it plays out over many rounds, people end up discussing the relative merits of the albums as they go, people sometimes change their minds as they go and a particular album grows on them, some will join the thread toward the end if they haven't had time to listen to the whole list at the start, and when there are only 2 or 3 albums left things get heated (usually in a friendly way). Basically it becomes more of a game. However if you want a quick way to find out which album of a list is the most popular amongst the MB community, what you suggest will definitely be quicker. Obviously it's your thread so I'll go with what you choose.
