What you say is 100% true and proves my point... In order for something to be "popular" it has to appeal to the masses... The more intricate something is (either lyrically or musically), the smaller the audience that can relate to it.

That definitely seems to be the trend, but I don't think it's necessarily the rule. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, though.
