International pop favorites
Yeah I went there... Hopefully in the correct forum
My favorite non-Brit pop falls into the Middle Eastern category (Greek bellydance music included). Seems to have a higher bioresonance than much of the American pop Ive heard. Now USUALLY if I listen to Middle Eastern music, I forgo pop altogether and prefer a good darbuka solo (minus the vocals). But something about EL Leilah by Diaa is just so fun and multidimensional. I think it's Turkish but could be mistaken. (And before anyone asks... No I don't remember the name of the dancer pictured, but know she's been active for at least ten years... This picture seems to get copy/pasted on all things "bellydance") |
Okay trying a different vid, same song:

It seems to be in arabic, so it's not turkish.
I don't listen to much music that could be called pop. Tlahoun Gessesse might be. Anyway, he's awesome. I love his soulful singing. |
I only know this one song but I enjoy it quite a bit...

Love the vocals; however the background music seems to be a chaotic distraction from his amazing range at best, and at worst... reminescent of a restaurant serving day old Eboli virus. |

I think it pretty cool and funky actually. |
I'm the complete opposite of ChelseaDagger. It's the background music that I really like in your clips, grindy. Their sound reminds me of that Dylan line, "Cracked bells and washed-out horns blow into my face with scorn." Tlahoun's voice I found a bit grating, I'm afraid. Do you think his backing band ever escaped him for a recording; I bet that would sound wonderful!
This is a song I like for very superficial reasons; the title, the video, and the sexy way she sings, "Ah-Ha". Well, that's the only bit I understand. A couple of old international pop threads if anyone is interested:- http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...nal-hi-fi.html http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...-pop-week.html |

But there is some great instrumental (or mostly instrumental) ethiopian music to be checked out. Do you know Mulatu Astatke? |
