^ Hey, thanks, grindy! I first came across Mulatu Astatke when a guy called s_k, who sadly no longer posts here, recommended them to me. Being busy at the time, I let them drop to the bottom of my to-do list, but listening to this album you've posted, I'm most impressed. What a cool sound!
More rock than pop, but an irresistible fuzzy guitar riff from Brazil, 1968:- Of course a good source for mainstream Euro-pop is this annual competition, covered by misspoptart:- http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...15-thread.html http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...14-thread.html |
I think Laleh should be a bit bigger internationally

I'm a huge K-Pop, Romanian pop, and Spanish pop music fan, I would highly encourage you to check 'em out. Too many suggestions to post here and lots of threads you can check!
Do K-pop with Derek: Korean music A few people have come and gone here: A New Turkish Song everyday. There's good stuff. My favorite: Romanian house. Ok so it's not really pop, but it's glorious and definitely the most popular kind of music in Romania. There you go :D |
This one starts off pretty generic but I've found myself listening to it all day. It's almost impossible to experience caffeine withdrawals with this playing:

It's an "old" song but I have never really heard her outside of Sweden. Same with Molly Sandén although I know she is trying to break into the US market. |

If you like Scandinavian music, you should check out the "everything rockabilly" thread... Assuming your interests cross over into that genre, of course. Same "feel" to the music though and I think you'll be surprised at how skilled they perform (what began as) an American genre. |
