Can you name a good pop artist?

Let's cut right to the chase:

I think today's pop music isn't as good as music is supposed to be...
Certainly, not all is bad, but I think it's all just too commercial.

On the other hand, music is just a thing of taste. Nothing is good or bad by definition. If you think it's good and you enjoy it, that it is good for you. I am just more a rock type o' guy..

:yeah:

Now I am curious if you can come up with some pop artists that I should listen and I can really enjoy. Can you name a few?

Xurtio 02-14-2015 07:14 AM

I've honestly never gotten the pop hate. There's only two important genres: good music and bad music. I actually like a lot of Taylor Swift's recent stuff. Anyway, here's some recent pop hits that I like:

Tom - 02-14-2015 09:56 AM

The first song, Settle Down, is indeed a good song.

The thing to me with pop is, beside from being very commercially orientated, it just doesn't touch me. I never really enjoy a song. At maximum, I'm like: nah it's good but I would never buy a cd for it.

Thanks for posting the songs though! The first one is one I can enjoy more than most other pop songs. Thanks!

Tom - 02-14-2015 09:57 AM

I agree with your sentence with that there are just two genres though!

Nice picks.. I wouldn't call Kimbra recent but she's pretty awesome. I've played that song in plug multiple times.

Ah yeah, I guess Settle Down is five years old now. Time flies.

An even older pop-artist that OP probably already knows is Cindy Lauper.

grtwhtgrvty 02-14-2015 09:20 PM

The Knife
Bjork
iamamiwhoami
FKA Twigs
Perfume Genius
Goldfrapp

There I named 6 right off the bat.

Thank you for giving me an excuse to post this.

Im not really up to date on modern pop but i do like the pop genre, i like Gaga and Alizee, Kylie minogue, stuff like that.

Of montreal is the only band i know that experiments with rock & electronic music to make incredible pop.
Some over their stuff sometimes goes over my head and it takes me awhile to get the groove but once i do i usually obsess over the song.

Overcast 02-15-2015 02:18 AM

I'm not sure how well some of these fit into the 'pop' category, but whatever:

Florence + the Machine
Beat Happening
Lana Del Rey
Beach House
Hospitality
St. Vincent
Mirah
Bjork

Thanks guys, many singers to try and listen!

With commercial pop I more aimed at singers like

Katy Perry
Beyoncé
Nicki Minaj
Iggy Azalea (both can't be called hiphop, although they call it hiphop themselves..)
Lady Gaga (is IMO better, but still not good)
Ariana Grande (hahaha)

And that sort of stuff....

I love Crowded House too, and Don't Dream It's Over is one of my favorite pop songs!!

Chula Vista 02-15-2015 11:06 AM

Crowded House may be the closest to the vaunted Beatles thrown. That band wrote some of the greatest pop music ever.

Im always amazed to find out some ppl actually enjoy Maroon 5.

i seriously don't see the appeal of mediocre pop tunes with nasally vocals..

his melody in that one song "kept playin love like it was just a game petending to feel the same" and the jazzy chords on rhythm, it was all pretty groovy. Overplayed, sure, but it met a minimum standard and it was catchy.

DannyRodeck 04-05-2015 05:12 PM

If good means talented then Lady Gaga, Sia.

gsrox 04-07-2015 06:56 PM

I think there's lots to like about Bruno Mars. "Uptown Funk" is lip licking fine.

Yes, I can. Billie Bloody Ocean:

Jeans so tight you could barely take them off when they were wet, pastel cardigans, too much hairspray, soda stream machines, smoking in school, the ZX Spectum, tunes like this are magical memory kindlers.

Well that's because you have sex with children, whereas I have the moves like Jagger.

Bitch.

Neapolitan 11-22-2015 12:32 AM

No idea really. I don't know if some these artists are considered more as indie than pop.

Hayley Kiyoko (US)
Jeanne Cherhal (France)
Dionne Bromfield (UK)
Marina and The Diamonds (UK)

Ed Sheeran

This fellow has the voice and the songwriting and the musicianship to become a folk legend. But he's pop star right now so let's enjoy him for that. No sense bemoaning the caterpillar for being the caterpillar and not yet the butterfly. Everything in its own time.

Ed Sheeran - Bloodstream

Chula Vista 12-04-2015 11:52 AM

Crowded House. (probably posted them about 10 pages ago)

As far as bands that can hang with the likes of The Beatles I'd add CH to that short list.
