Lana del Rey is one of my favorite artists. A gorgeous lady and brilliant vocalist. Bad disease, born to die, blue velvet, next to me, kill kill are good examples are fantastic artistic quality :)

Ass Napkin Ed 05-01-2013 11:19 PM

LDR is a decent song writer but based on her many botched live performances she is not ready for the big leagues, she should stick to writing b/c her performance skills are cringe worthy

Paedantic Basterd 05-02-2013 12:09 AM

I can't stand her pouty voice. She sounds like she is singing through duckface.

blue-eyedspruce 05-21-2013 04:38 PM

I love how much they used Forever Young as an orchestral theme in Great Gatsby. I know some people hated the movie, but I think this song was one of the strong points of the movie.

Dulce 07-26-2013 09:44 PM

Blue jeans is such a groovy jam.

misspoptart 07-29-2013 03:55 AM

O Mods, where art thou? Lana is Lana del Rey, del Rey, del REY!!

Queen Boo 08-03-2013 08:45 PM

Can't wait for tropico

Thanks!

This! It's semi-driving me bonkers.

Love Lana Del Rey. She's one of my favs. I actually like her lyrics because they somehow add some substance to such shallow situations and the music helps too. Take "This Is What Makes Us Girl", it's like "Mean Girls" with serious feels.

I love the majority of her music, but "National Anthem", "Summertime Sadness", "Ride", "Cola" (the fact that this lady managed to make me love a song from the POV of a druggie mistress is amazing), and "Young and Beautiful". I'm obsessed with "Young and Beautiful". The music video highlights her talent of making something so simple so beautiful and she has a taste for aesthetics IMO that works really well.

I like her live performances so she's completely got me as a songwriter, performer, and entertainer.

I don't know about "Tropico"- I've liked most of her music videos so far so it'll be cool to see more- but for some reason I'm not really that excited.

Queen Boo 08-04-2013 08:00 PM

I didn't think cola was about drugs, I just thought it was hilarious. Why do you think it's about drugs?

I don't think the whole song is 'about drugs' but I mean she does sing Drugs suck it up like vanilla icees in the third verse...

Some of the lyrics:
Harvey's in the sky with diamonds and he's making me crazy (I come alive, alive)
All he wants to do is party with his pretty baby.

Thought it was a reference to The Beatles' song. When she's with that guy, she does drugs with him.

Queen Boo 08-04-2013 08:10 PM

Damn I missed that.

Queen Boo 08-04-2013 08:13 PM

Somebody I follow on tumblr said they think "Carmen" is about Lindsay Lohan and I almost know that it isn't but I couldn't listen to that song without thinking about her since.
Oh what I would give to have been a fly on the wall when Lilo, Lana, and Gags partied together at Chateau Marmont.

BlueGreenMood 08-04-2013 08:15 PM

I really hated the lyrics so I looked them up for some sort of substance and realized like many of her songs, it's a story and it doesn't necessarily point to a moral or purpose. It does have some interesting details though that put it beyond some others' lyrics. Plus once again the music just gives so much feels.

Thought it was just another one of Lana's fantasy autobiographies, twisting possible real feelings with a made-up story.

Queen Boo 08-04-2013 08:20 PM

I honestly thought her life was really as fantastic as she makes it out to be.

BlueGreenMood 08-04-2013 08:34 PM

Haven't really read up on her personal life although I've heard about some hate for it. Should get to that eventually...

Queen Boo 08-04-2013 08:41 PM

She was really average looking before her plastic surgery but that's pretty much all I know about it. I should do the same but her being a little mysterious makes it more appealing.

Lana Del Rey was pummeled by critics for her 2012 debut performance on Saturday Night Live which some attributed to a bad case of stage fright. To make matters worse, the following week SNL performer Kristen Wiig did a hilarious parody of Lana as a vacuous model on the show's Weekend Update segment. Apparently Ms. Del Rey was a one time runway model which made her an even easier target for ridicule.

Ms. Del Rey's management cancelled a 30 date North American tour in the wake of the negative reviews of SNL performance.

My own take on Lana Del Rey is she is a hugely talented singer and songwriter whose major label debut album was over-hyped by her management and record label. I didn't see the SNL performance by Lana Del Rey but I've seen her on the Letterman show and she was fantastic.

I've not watched the SNL performance, not avoiding it, but for some reason I've never felt inclined to.

My friend watched it and said was a bit whiny, which I could see from someone who isn't into her voice. I've watched other performances by her and they seem perfectly in tune with what I expect from her as an artist.

Gavin B. 08-07-2013 08:22 AM

Lana Del Rey at Lollapolooza Chicago August 3, 2013. It's i-Phone recording but it's okay. There are so many fans are singing along it often drowns out her vocals.

Queen Boo 08-07-2013 01:02 PM

I really like Lana and her music but singing live isn't one of her strengths.

jennamkay 08-07-2013 03:40 PM

Her songs are so good but she's so... mediocre. Good production on her songs

very much this. It's better in some videos than others but she doesn't sound much like she does on the album.

sopsych 08-13-2013 06:55 PM

That I find a DJ's remix (of "Summertime Sadness") much more compelling than most of the Lana del Rey songs I've heard tells me that she's very mediocre. The remix's chart success tells me that is a common opinion.

Dulce 10-08-2013 02:23 AM

Summertime Sadness sounds nice. I like "Blue Jeans" though. :D

Armstrong 10-17-2013 02:13 AM

I think she's good, it seems to me that she's got that "born to die" flow in everything she does, I mean a hint of fatal predestination in her eyes or something. But probably I'm overreacting and she's just another duckface girl on stage)

Goofle 10-20-2013 12:23 PM

Absolutely loving her at the moment.

What caught your attention?

I liked her album tbh.

Goofle 10-20-2013 02:04 PM

Just decided to listen to her album. Awesome production and her vocals are smart.

Cuthbert 10-20-2013 02:08 PM

Agreed, what's your favourite track?

Best tracks for me are Born To Die & Off To The Races.

It's a good listen.

Born to Die, Ride, Summertime Sadness, Video Games, Blue Velvet, Blue Jeans, Bel Air, Yayo and Body Electric.

I just LOVE Million Dollar Man.

Goofle 12-05-2013 03:35 PM

Still on a major Lana kick. Her voice is pretty great, production fits perfectly and the lyrics aren't always so bad that it makes her insufferable.

Fave tracks:

I literally only just gave her album a listen (I downloaded it a long time ago), it's absolutely beautiful. I love her obsession with vintage, romanticism, and 50/60s theme. Her voice is absolutely incredible, she has quite an extensive vocal range.

My favourites so far is Blue Jeans, Summertime Sadness, Video Games, Without You. Her deluxe album is quite big, I'm impressed that she can create such a great album with so many tracks

Goofle 12-05-2013 04:50 PM

"Ride" is one of my absolute favourite song ever. Would easily make my Top 100.
