Sexy music videos
Hello Everyone!
I need a big favour if you could all help would be great :D So basically I'm writing an article for my university magazine about sexualisation in music videos. So the question I would love you to help out answering is: Do music videos in todays culture go to far compared with the 80's, is the use of sexulisation within today's pop stars just part of the 21st century? Does it make videos more interesting? Any comments or opinions great or small are greatly welcomed and appreciatated!:D Thanks again! xx |
It's all relative.
They're certainly more explicit. I don't think it's more shocking to modern audiences then what 80's videos were to their respective audience. Of course I enjoy it, but if your clinging on to archaic ideas of modesty or religion or whatever i can see it being a frightening time. I do think subject matter has gotten pretty...lazy lately. Or at least more obvious. Songs about ass are blowing up mainstream media, i don't know how you enjoy songs that simple without the accompanying music video, like I certainly couldn't just listen to a song where the chorus is literally "ass ass ass ass" for enjoyment, or while walking my dog or something. |

Twenty first century pop music videos are far more sexualised than they were in the 80s. The biggest factor behind this is commercial imperative and the need to make profit. It is a product of manufactured music.

A few months ago I sat down and watched a video countdown after a couple years of abstaining from popular music television, and I was pretty disgusted by the content of most of the videos. I don't think it's any worse than it was a year ago, but after you've removed yourself from that kind of content, it's a bit of a shock to the system.
I'm pretty conservative about sexuality too though, so that probably didn't help. I can't begin to think of what will be acceptable in another ten years. |
Well, we live in the porno age. I mean, in the 70s and 80s only guys in brown overcoats, and sunglasses would dare step into a porno store.
Thanks to the Internet, porn is everywhere, and porn is free. Music videos are trying to be controversial? pathetic! Go on the Internet, and you can find videos of people disemboweling others with hammers. |

Seriously, I think the better question is whether sexualization makes videos more interesting. I'd say no, not unless it's a new, extreme form of sexualization. It's possible that plots can be more interesting if sexual activity is left out of them, more room for other things in just those few minutes. For some reason, I'm thinking of "Hazard," by Richard Marx. Look at the thread about music videos with storylines. |
He is not going to link to that. It is a clear violation of our rules. It will be deleted. Also, you're pretty bloody sick for asking.

Pretty sure he was joking.
