Rebecca Black

Rebecca Black is an up-and-coming dance-pop megastar. Her first single, "Friday" has recently released to massive popular appeal and critical acclaim. Take a gander:

Scarlett O'Hara 03-14-2011 02:57 AM

That was awful. I want my 3 minutes and 47 seconds back. Critically acclaimed for what? Worse lyrics than Ke$ha?

Word vomit. No need to thank me.

Scissorman 03-14-2011 04:58 AM

Is this for real?

James 03-14-2011 10:20 AM

Best pop single ever. It's hilarious. FRIDAI FRIDAI, COMES AFTER THURSDAI.

While her lyrics may seem trivial at first listen, only once you've given them time to sink in will they reveal their brilliance. They present an unadulterated peeping hole into the complexities and mysteries of American teenage life as no lyrics before them have. Perhaps, if I were to so boldly suggest, if you think the lyrics are "worse than kesha" you simply do not "get" it. But I think it would take a particularly thick-skulled individual for that to be the case as Rebecca Black has the lyrical efficacy to sing about eating cereal. How could you not observe her lyrical proficiency when just about every person in America can relate to eating cereal? Surely it must be the fault of your New Zealand-er-ness.

At the end of the day, "Friday" is an American pop masterpiece and I eagerly anticipate more gems from the artist.

This is pop at its FINEST. Rebecca Black, may your star soar as high as the heavens.

I was just about to post this. I mean it HAS to be a joke or a parody or something. No one goes out of their way to make a song sound like this. The rap verse has zero rhymes for god's sake.

R-B, Rebecca Black
So chillin’ in the front seat (In the front seat)
In the back seat (In the back seat)
I’m drivin’, cruisin’ (Yeah, yeah)
Fast lanes, switchin’ lanes
Wit’ a car up on my side (Woo!)
(C’mon) Passin’ by is a school bus in front of me
Makes tick tock, tick tock, wanna scream
Check my time, it’s Friday, it’s a weekend
We gonna have fun, c’mon, c’mon, y’all

I simply see that as post-modern rapping. Clearly an artist who is above and beyond the typical methods used by his contemporaries, expanding and improving upon their formula in ways they hadn't dared to comprehend. Bravo, and truly an awesome rap verse to rival those of even the greatest of the hip-hop greats.

FaSho 03-14-2011 06:32 PM

I don't see why people don't like this song. It almost perfectly expresses the feelings I've been trying to get out. It's like the song is about me. Finally, music that means something!

Thom Yorke 03-14-2011 06:40 PM

I hear it's a concept album, and this song was merely just the most radio-friendly. I think we'll understand the over-arching theme once we hear it sandwiched between "Therzdai" and "Saterdai".

s_k 03-14-2011 06:44 PM

That was pretty gruesome.
Not a very good dylan imitation by the way.
That guy should imitate Lou Reed. Sounds more like Reed anyway.

EvilChuck 03-14-2011 06:58 PM

Who was the rapper? I didnt recognise him, but his fake smile near the end of the video when he is driving the car is just too cringe :/

lol I couldn't help laughing and thinking of this video

I'm like she's a pop version of ludacris rapping about whatever is around him

clutnuckle 03-14-2011 07:26 PM

One of the few tuneless, gimmicky, outright terrible pop songs that I can really dig into. Most of those songs are like a hot tub for me; tough to get in at first, but once you're in you'll never leave. I legitimately listened to it for an hour straight the other day. A gigantic waste of time, something I could've used to listen to much of the good music I have waiting for me, but you know.

TOMORROW IS SATURDAY
AND SUNDAY
COMES AFTERWAAA-A-AA-AARDSSsS....

Nah, it wasn't great but I laughed nonetheless.

s_k 03-15-2011 05:10 AM

Oh wait, I meant the original song was gruesome.
The fake dylan cover is pretty funny ;)

I'm guessing they're very rich. Ark Music Records take on teenage girls from wealthy parents and make stars out of them...

It kills me to see fans of Lady GaGa, Ke$ha, Black Eyed Peas, etc. making fun of this. It's like watching a dog attack its own tail.

You have to admit, those lot PALE in comparison to the comic genius of Rebecca Black!

I didn't even bother responding to Wayfarer's comment when I saw it earlier because it just sounds like he hates all Pop music in general so it's a waste of time

s_k 03-15-2011 06:55 PM

Well I most certainly don't like gaga or the black eyed peas.
I think it's crap. But I do have the ability to hear that they make something that has the slightest bit to do with music and lyric writing. This... Rebecca, can't sing nor write lyrics. And musically it's just... humbug.
I have honestly never ever heard so much autotune that wasn't used as an effect. I thought the new Britney album had a lot of that. Well... compared to this, no.

Oh c'mon. Live a little. She references The Cure's Friday I'm In Love in the video.

I thought that too, he was bunching them all together as if they were the same...but he has a point in that there are some really weird lyrics in some pop songs - Katy Perry's Firework comes to mind. But it's pop...the focus is on the production, melody and vocals, none of which are delivered at a basic human level with Rebecca Black. But who can blame her? She doesn't have the same resources as say, Katy Perry, and she's only 13. And these basic qualities are what give 'Friday' its charm! I LOVE it.

The song is charting on itunes. :)

There's pop-metal, pop-rap, pop-soul, jazz-pop, country-pop, dream-pop, indie-pop, dance-pop, reggae-pop, and so on and so on....

But in the case of many of the most prominent "pop" artists of the moment (i.e. Lady GaGa/Ke$ha/BEP/etc.), I fail to see how "Yesterday is Thursday, today is Friday" is any more laughable than, for instance, the Black Eyed Peas listing off days of the week and blurting out random Jewish salutations in "I Gotta Feeling", or Lady GaGa utilizing baby-gibberish as lyrics in "Bad Romance", or talking about taking a ride on somebody's "disco stick", or Justin Beiber's one-word chorus in "Baby", etc. etc.

If you want to go back further, how about some early Beatles? "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah!" Wow. Rebecca Black can't compare to that genius. I'm not saying pop music is bad so much as saying it's bad to act like a condescending douche because you prefer one catchy four-chord tune with vacuously silly lyrical content to another.

You can think it's bad all you want but I could careless. I prefer one over the other and that's all that matters to me. You can take your condescending comments elsewhere.

Haha Rebecca Black and The Beatles in the same sentence.

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

[Rebecca Black - Verse 2]

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, you got this
My friend is by my right
I got this, you got this
Now you know it

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

[Chorus]

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Rebecca Black Friday lyrics found on REBECCA BLACK - FRIDAY LYRICS

Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

[Bridge]

Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)
We-we-we so excited
We so excited
We gonna have a ball today

Tomorrow is Saturday
And Sunday comes after...wards
I don’t want this weekend to end

[Rap Verse]

R-B, Rebecca Black
So chillin’ in the front seat (In the front seat)
In the back seat (In the back seat)
I’m drivin’, cruisin’ (Yeah, yeah)
Fast lanes, switchin’ lanes
Wit’ a car up on my side (Woo!)

[Chorus]

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

She has to have a bowl and cereal and is "seeing everything"? Thinking about fun cruising down the highway? Which seat can I take? I mean this thing is almost unarguably the worst thing ever written. It's like a bunch of people sat down and brainpooled to come up with the worst thing they possibly could.

Have you actually watched the Rebecca Black video? Because if you have, I doubt you would be saying this. And I can't believe you just quoted a snippet from a Beatles song and think you can judge their lyrical abilities on that alone. You've just demonstrated that you have a very limited understanding of pop mechanics and its musical language.

Y so serious?
