I'm sure they were on a list of top 5 bands you like, but don't like as much as you could because of their fans.

The first group from 65 that started to produce something interesting to me, maybe there's other groups. But for now I haven't found them. I think around 65 The Beatles released Help and then Rubber Soul. And The Stones had Out of our Heads out, Rubber Soul is in top 3 favourite Beatles albums. I've not heard anything from around 1965 from other groups that's really interested me. But I can definitely see both sides to it, if you find music from around that time interesting and different and just as good if not better than The Beatles, it must be incredibly frustrating. But The Beatles are my favourite group, so yeah...

How about from before the 60s altogether?

I distinctly remember The Beatles and Radiohead. I would chase it up, but it would be such effort. I guess I'll have to take your word for it.

50s music? I've heard bits and bobs, a lot of "bubblegum rock" and Buddy Holly. I've heard things from the 50s that only confirm in my mind The Beatles were the first to produce interesting music..

I have no idea what you're talking about here. You distinctly remember the Beatles and Radiohead what?

I was actually talking about all of human history prior to the 1960s but, sure, if you want to restrict the conversation to the just the 1950s that's fine. Here are some people I think were making interesting music in the 50s:

Chuck Berry
Little Richard
Ike Turner
Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Eddie Cochran
Miles Davis
Thelonious Monk
Charles Mingus
Raymond Scott
Esquivel!
Art Blakey
Ornette Coleman
Martin Denny
Harry Belafonte
Johnny Cash

Though I do get you confused with another mod, Urban I think. I think he's British and you're American. But I always mistake the both of you.

I've heard about half of them. I like Johnny Cash a lot out of the ones from that list that I've heard. Chuck Berry, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Miles Davis etc. I never took to, my 50s music is pretty pathetic to be fair. I really should brush up on it a little more.

Yeah, you're disregarding like 86% of good jazz and 50% of good country there TCS.

Yeah, you must be confusing me with someone else, I never made a list like that. Plus, unlike the Beatles, I actually do like Radiohead. Not my favorite band in the world or anything but I enjoy a lot of their music.

I said I liked Johnny Cash!

I'm not disregarding it in any way shape or form, I'm saying I've heard bits and bobs. And as far as I'm concerned, The Beatles were the first to make interesting music, because what I've heard from the 50s hasn't really appealed to me. Even though I do recognise that people who are into Jazz and Soul music would really hate the whole "Beatles were the first!" thing.

Could've sworn it was you, but it may have been Urban. Radiohead have more annoying fans than The Beatles, I can't stand Radiohead fans.. and I actually like the band.

really?

I don't I've posted anything out of line.

Or anything untrue.

The Beatles are better than the Beach Boys.

whoa, Vato - I don't think that at ALL.

They were the first to do it on a worldwide scale...in the popular culture idiom.

There were LOTS of bands making deep, interesting music before; just not on the radio.

true.

But the Beach Boys are inferior to them all.

I never, ever claimed that they were that.

I just said they were better than the Beach Boys.

And they are.

The Beatles are my favourite group, and The Beach Boys are alright... My opinion would purely by out of bias of who's better. As I've listened to The Beatles records so many times, and I don't listen to The Beach Boys much my opinion would be a bit moot. I don't mind The Beach Boys, but I don't think they're that great. I don't even rate Pet Sounds particularly highly, but that's just me.
