It's faltering in my book. Most of The Beach Boys career was a falter in my opinion, with a few execptions. But that's just me, I can't make myself like their music. I respect the fact that they're really good in the eyes of some, and they do have some good songs. I'm listening to "The Nearest Faraway Place" right now. It's a nice little instrumental, very relaxing and pretty.

It seems you mean faltering in the sense of valuing popularity over quality.
In my book quality always trumps popularity. edit: if there's some kind of fight going on here then my comments don't contribute much to either side. I like both bands and I also feel that individual members of both bands flourished after both bands disbanded.

No that's not it. And if you want to talk about remaining popular without being active, The Beatles are the king of that. Much more than The Beach Boys. Popularity aside, I think The Beatles are better than The BB's in every category except vocal harmony. A lot of The BB's songs are just so boring to me. The Beatles songs have much more energy and life, not to mention diversity.

and when they became purely a "nostalgia" act, starting with 15 Big Ones, nobody gives a damn anymore not to mention some truly horrendous records, i.e. Summer in Paradise and hiring John Stamos - they were pretty much a joke by then |
