How can remaining popular without touring or recording/selling hits be considered faltering?
To me doing that equals success.

It's faltering in my book. Most of The Beach Boys career was a falter in my opinion, with a few execptions. But that's just me, I can't make myself like their music. I respect the fact that they're really good in the eyes of some, and they do have some good songs. I'm listening to "The Nearest Faraway Place" right now. It's a nice little instrumental, very relaxing and pretty.

It seems you mean faltering in the sense of valuing popularity over quality.
In my book quality always trumps popularity.

edit: if there's some kind of fight going on here then my comments don't contribute much to either side. I like both bands and I also feel that individual members of both bands flourished after both bands disbanded.

No that's not it. And if you want to talk about remaining popular without being active, The Beatles are the king of that. Much more than The Beach Boys. Popularity aside, I think The Beatles are better than The BB's in every category except vocal harmony. A lot of The BB's songs are just so boring to me. The Beatles songs have much more energy and life, not to mention diversity.

The basis for that belief would be that the beatles were so consistent their entire career and even after they broke up paul and John had a lot of success. But ya, they wouldn't have kept it going forever. I don't think anyone could do that.

I listened to some of those albums. I'll keep listening.

The title track on Wild Honey is pretty good, other than that nothing really stands out to me. Currently listening to 20/20

nothing they ever did matches the Beatles, although Ram and Plastic Ono Band comes close

they only faltered cos they lost their anchor Brian and started putting out incoherent, focusless stuff - the public couldn't keep up with them

and when they became purely a "nostalgia" act, starting with 15 Big Ones, nobody gives a damn anymore

not to mention some truly horrendous records, i.e. Summer in Paradise and hiring John Stamos - they were pretty much a joke by then

Don't get me wrong. I really like some Beach Boys songs. They're just not as consistent as The Beatles in my opinion.

20/20 is currently one of my favorites from The BB's.

^^I never said that they were in any way consistent after Brian's collapse

Completely understanble when a band loses their best songwriter. The others wrote some good songs, though.

Band on the Run is better than some of the lesser albums by The Beatles for sure.
