The basis for that belief would be that the beatles were so consistent their entire career and even after they broke up paul and John had a lot of success. But ya, they wouldn't have kept it going forever. I don't think anyone could do that.
I listened to some of those albums. I'll keep listening.
The title track on Wild Honey is pretty good, other than that nothing really stands out to me. Currently listening to 20/20

nothing they ever did matches the Beatles, although Ram and Plastic Ono Band comes close

It's faltering in my book. Most of The Beach Boys career was a falter in my opinion, with a few execptions. But that's just me, I can't make myself like their music. I respect the fact that they're really good in the eyes of some, and they do have some good songs. I'm listening to "The Nearest Faraway Place" right now. It's a nice little instrumental, very relaxing and pretty.

they only faltered cos they lost their anchor Brian and started putting out incoherent, focusless stuff - the public couldn't keep up with them
and when they became purely a "nostalgia" act, starting with 15 Big Ones, nobody gives a damn anymore
not to mention some truly horrendous records, i.e. Summer in Paradise and hiring John Stamos - they were pretty much a joke by then
