i personally love by the way...honestly i consider it to be one of their classics now. one hot minute had its moments but without frusciante i found it hard to appreciate. californication was a return to prominence but your standard rock type sound. by the way just latched on to this chilled yet funky vibe and i loved it. stadium arcadium was weak imo.

and i actually liked stadium. it can't compare to by the way in any way but its still a great album. it takes a little to recognized that they've changed, but hey, they're growing up. and now that john's gone, flea should have a bigger role. so who knows what's coming... |
I'd like to say Radiohead, they're the only big modern band I can think off with the same sort of cult like reverence that The Beatles seemed to get. But it doesn't feel right, because when The Beatles started experimenting they kept a very accessible pop-ness whereas Radiohead took it in other directions.
If I was only judging by a stream of great pop songs then I would hands down pick Why?, although he is not nearly as prolific - and the throne of The Beatles is a lot more than solid pop music. Maybe if he has a massive single and everyone discovers his discography retrospectively. Otherwise I could probably get behind Fasho on RHCP. |

Southpark probably makes fun of a lot of your favorites. I mean, there's the Jonas Brothers, Kanye West, Barbara Streisand...

I've heard Switchfoot. :D

Music has changed wayyy too much since The Beatles were even around. There's no band who will grow that successful. One band can be loved by many, but hated by many too. It's just too varied these days.

alright, after reading through this thread i have to agree with the Barenaked Ladies nod. personally i prefer Sloan but i don't think they got that big outside of Canada.
Fastball was a decent one hit wonder back in the day as well, and while they're probably still going at it, few people are hearing it. The Starlight Mints would be a good fit for the 'throne' as well, if they could get a break. Blur anyone? as for the Chili Peppers in terms of this thread. WTF? their sound is maturing??? seems to me it's been adult contemporary drek for a decade, and i was the kind of fan who would wear a sock as a haloween costume. and Switchfoot sucks, it's like Coldplay replaced the piano with a guitar player who only ever learned U2 songs. |

Rolling Stone seems to be toting The Jonas Brothers as "the NUUU BEATLEZZZ".
If I were to compare them to anyone, it would be the Bee Jees, because of the relation between members, the harmonizing, the (at least starting out for the JBs) fanbase of pubescent girls, the mock factor, and the shared initials with blow job. When you talk about a song that gets massive airway, is sung on the playgroud by kindergarteners, has massive popularity amoungst youth, is somewhat vulgar, and has a not-so-outright meaning, I immediately think of "OPP". But I guess The Beatles did that too, eh? |

This one by Tears For Fears always reminded me of the style of the Beatles, (music & lyrics). Especially the change up later on in the song. To me, it would seem alot easier to find a song (only), where you may hear a big influence by the Beatles. But, its all in fun trying to see who others pick to inherit the Beatles throne. nobody will take the Beatles throne, there can only be one band that has that kind of impact and it's a combination of their talent and the fact they did it first. Wondering who will take their place is like wondering which fast food chain will top McDonald's in marketing/sales. Nobody, ever.

My first post, gratz to myself!
I read through most of this thread and i didn't see any mention of coldplay. They are one of the most popular international bands going and they are not as commercilized as a N.A band such as the Jonas Brothers (go go disney marketing machine!). Coldplay is a similar generic type of soft rock/pop, however lyrically and musically they seem more diverse. I personally prefer some of the other mentions in this thread (the chilipeppers for example, im not even a coldplay fan for that matter), however, I still feel that coldplay appeals to a larger audience then some of the other mentions. |
The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones,(by all reason should inherit the throne), The 'Who' would be a runner up.

Maná. Great tunes (though I think many of them sound the same). Consistently good.

bright eyes (i'm sure i've pissed someone off by suggesting this)

For everyone whose never heard of switchfoot (you really arent missing anything). Here is their "enormous" hit single that took its rightful place on buzz ballads along with every other cute little power ballad.
draw your own conclusions on their sound, posting a video is what should have been done from the get go |
Elliott Smith, duh. Shoulda thought of that before.
