American Idol

About time we have a thread on this (I searched and searched, but if we already do let me know).
I am by no means a fan of the music aspect to this show. That said, I am not into that pointless 'anti-American Idol' or VFTW crap.

http://www.sugarslam.com/wp-content/...rican-idol.jpg

The show, for me, is just harmless entertainment with some random trash about being "inspirational" or something like that. I don't pay attention to the contestants after they leave, and I certainly am not a fan of any of the winners. Watching the 2009 finale now... did anyone else LOL when Kiss played?

EDIT: I just found a string of simular threads. Most of them are incredibly old, but still I'll let an admin decide.

TumorAttitude 05-31-2009 02:36 PM

Yeah, I laughed at Kiss.
They always have really strange, drawn out finales, and this one definitly did not disappoint.

djchameleon 06-01-2009 03:39 PM

what are people's opinions on Kris Allen's cover of Heartless and Apologize?

they took off the studio quality version of heartless.

PinkCigarette 06-01-2009 03:43 PM

I don't think Kris is a horrible singer but I don't think he should have won. I was never a fan of Adam's (him butchering Led Zeppelin made me want to kill someone) but between the two, he was more talented. He had the energy and the voice. Kris is just another "babyface" and I really don't think he'll get far in his recording career. I actually think Adam will be the star in the end.

djchameleon 06-01-2009 03:56 PM

I think he did an okay job with Apologize but I just don't like hearing him sing heartless. Sure he sings it better than Kanye but that's not even the point of the song. I could hear more emotion/hurt from Kanye's horrible singing of the song than I could in Kris'. Adam has more star quality because he's been doing it for so long. He's pretty much a professional without a deal. He probably used to get paid for gigs back in his hometown. Majority of AI winners don't get anywhere career wise. There are only two exceptions.

Exsqueeze me, but in your opinion, how did he butcher it?

What do you think butcher means? :P

IMO, he did a terrible job at it. Not as bad as his horrible rendition of Born to be Wild but, being a Zeppelin fan, it personally made my ears bleed.

TumorAttitude 06-01-2009 05:05 PM

Eh, I thought it was okay.
Born to be Wild was dull as hell though.

Well, it does fall upon personal opinions. A lot of people loved Adam and I never fell into that category. My favourite to win was Allison and I was in shock when she was eliminated. I just couldn't see how she wasn't a finalist. She had a Christina Aguilera type of voice. She was a bit shy but she started to break out of her shell.

They say it's about talent but is it really? Allison is a far better singer than Kris and Danny yet she didn't make it as far.

It just doesn't make sense.

you sir , are sadly mistaken. It's not about talent, it's about the whole package. Who is a better and confident performer. I don't even watch American Idol until the finale. It's just a big popularity contest so if you have a likable personality that's outgoing and a bit quirky you can make it pretty far that's when the singing talent comes into play.

You have to able to be popular enough to sell records for simon cowell's production company. It's like signing a deal with the devil. Even the top 8 are stuck in a contract to perform on a concert tour and get **** pay most likely.

TumorAttitude 06-02-2009 05:05 PM

Patton, I agree. I rooted for Alison from her Heart cover to her elimination. I agree that she had an excellent voice, but hey, shes a shoo-in for a record deal. Possiple mainstream success.

It was Adam's Led Zeppy cover that actually made me notice him as something other then the guy who dressed emo...

djchameleon, its SO fixed. And I think its the top 35 (?) or so that have to abide by Cowell's rules for like 6 years after Idol. They have to be PC so they don't screw up Idol's image.
I'm Captain Obious......

I believe this also happened last year but they were reporting that the votes were being messed around with by AT&T and AI. Makes you wonder when the guy you expect to lose suddenly wins by a large number of votes.

TumorAttitude 06-03-2009 11:11 AM

Somebody I know had a theory that all of Dani's fans voted for Chris. That would make sense. They didn't say how many votes he won by, which was a bit suspicious...
Yeah, I think they eliminate them according to votes at first, then they keep around and eliminate people according to how much money they'll make the record company. Adam will do absolutly fine, which is probably why they think Kris needed the win. More marketable

Final_Victim 06-20-2009 02:20 AM

I only watch american idol for the auditions.

Me too.

The "good" singers are boring, I want to see the train wrecks and Simon Cowell consume their souls and that's it.

Kool_Dude_HaMeR 06-20-2009 03:56 PM

Simon Cowell is just pure annoying.

And I wouldn't mind, but he's on EVERY one of them "Talent" search shows.

So you and Schadenfreude are good friends, eh?

ThePhanastasio 05-05-2011 09:02 PM

While I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I still go to my mother's house every Wednesday and Thursday to watch the show, I will say that I would absolutely marry this girl, Haley Reinhart:

She's made it to the Top Four now, and there's just something about her, and the edge in her voice...she's way more into jazz and that sort of thing, and I'd really like her to stick true to her roots and do something good after the show ends.

AmericanIdle 05-06-2011 01:46 PM

Did you guys hear that Lady Gaga is going to be on Idol next week to mentor the top 4? How do you think she will do?

Rigght? She is probably the most talented person i've ever seen on one of these shows When she sang LeAnne Rhymes "Blue".. it blew my freakin' mind. She has an amazing and unique talent.

Burning Down 05-06-2011 02:23 PM

I don't watch American Idol regularly, but I caught this atrocious performance last night:

And yes, I have heard this guy sing other things and his voice just grates on my nerves. Way too screechy.

Yeah, I heard about her being a mentor this week. I think she might actually have a lot to offer, from an entertainment point-of-view. A big part of Idol is how well a singer can entertain a crowd, and I think Gaga can provide some tips.

She does have a pretty good singing voice and range as well so it's not just about her ability to entertain a crowd

ThePhanastasio 05-10-2011 10:59 PM

I do think Lady Gaga will actually be a very helpful mentor. I'm also pretty happy that they convinced the girl I'm pulling for to sing an unreleased Gaga song last week - because I feel like that's going to spill over into this week with Gaga as the mentor and get her some more votes!

Also, this chick - I was youtube creepin' and came across her pre-idol singing Pink Floyd, Sublime, etc. with her band - and one of her good friends in her band's youtube account is a Phish reference.

So I'm pulling for the girl even harder now!

How can gaga mentor these kids when she herself doesn't have that amazing voice? I'm a big fan of her but I do accept that most of it is because of her support to the LGBT and her disco-anthem songs. But as far as the voice is concern, along with Rihanna and Britney, she falls on the category of hit makers who can't sing.

look for her MonsterBall concert online....watch it and then tell me that she can't sing

sleepnow 05-11-2011 03:29 PM

Oh, she can definitely sing. But I'm just saying that I think she will be able to help a lot with the entertainment aspect of each performance, since people seem to talk about how well she performs rather than how well she can sing.
The contestants have the voice; Lady Gaga will be able to help each of them bring out their own performance style. Gaga knows how to entertain, and keep people talking, so it will be interesting to see how each contestant uses her advice.

sleepnow 05-13-2011 12:39 PM

James has been eliminated. Let's go Scotty!

kooldude1 05-15-2011 09:35 PM

I like the show.

It's still the American Dream. I love Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken's ok, Jordan Sparks is ok, she's got some lungs, Daughtry is good. I love Paula Abdul she's going to X Factor of course and she's a judge but she's still got it. I'm quite frankly amazed at the talent they've introduced to the world. I hope American Idol is forever.

Since Casey got eliminated, I don't see any reason why American Idol is any saner than The Simpsons.

Howard the Duck 05-16-2011 05:10 AM

i hope Scotty wins

cavein 05-16-2011 01:27 PM

Since Casey's not in it, I don't really have a preference anymore. I did see lady gaga, and thought she was amazing.

He's pretty good. He'll definitely have a career whether or not he wins. Sometimes the runner-ups do better than the actual winners.

ThePhanastasio 05-17-2011 02:59 AM

I'm still all about Haley.

She did an awesome job IMO. I like when she taught whatshisface to shake his pelvis like Elvis.

sleepnow 05-17-2011 05:16 PM

The piece with her and Scotty was great. She's one of those few fearless entertainers who knows how to create controversy, and get people talking. That's just one side of the music biz the contestants should know about, and it could actually lengthen their careers.

Stacey. 05-25-2011 04:07 PM

I well wanted Haley to win :banghead:

Now I hope Lauren wins though, she's got a great voice. I'm not a fan of Scotty that much, like he's very good, but I don't really like that style of music.

She actually knows her shit that's why. :)
