Can I also just say that a lot of females (and males) in other genres such as rock music wear very little or very controversial/ revealing clothes but they don't get criticised nearly as much simply because they're not in pop music.
I agree with your stance to an extent. Some artists and bands do genuinely benefit from the stage show, the gimmick and everything that goes with it and when its done properly it can add to the overall experience.

However I think sometimes these things help to distract one from the music and ive always asked the same questions when it comes to things like this which is why we would want to be distracted from the music and is there a reason for that?

I thought that when i went to see Slipknot and couldnt help but wonder if the reason they have a gimmick and a stage show is to help distract me. Yeah the music is turd but look, his drums go up and down!

I had a similar experience with Marilyn Manson. Id heard so much about their stage show and so i watched them at a festival out of curiosity and after about 3/4 of the set was convinced enough that the stage show was flashy and impressive but it made the music no better whatsoever. I gave them the V's and went to watch another band.

Maybe im just not educated enough in the ways of Lady Gaga and WHY her stage shows are so key and so vital but i have to admit that so far all i can see are gimmicks and distractions. I dont see a connection between her and the music in that way.

Also id agree that pop stars are more heavily criticised but thats because they are in the mainstream and people know who they are. You dont have to have an interest in music to know who pop stars are. I think it also has alot to do with WHY you do the things you do and WHY you wear the things you wear. Theres alot of money to be made in pop stars showing skin. It may be smart if you want to make a quick buck, but you will invite criticism for that decision.

I agree there music is turd but Joey J is one talented dude. He plays 10x better than most while upside down.
