I think our combined efforts scared ImmortalDiotima out of the thread.

Say what you will, she certainly has everybody talking. And that's kind of her point, isn't it?

You and I obviously live in two alternate universes.

If people in america were expected to do their research, presidential candidates wouldn't need to spend millions of dollars to send their messages. They could simply have a website and people would have to have the responsibility of finding out information for themselves.

Sadly, that is not the world we live in. 30% of highschool graduates in america couldn't point to america on a map. 10% of american high school graduates think that california is a country. (I wish I could find the study that showed this, I had it bookmarked but i guess it's gone. I'll try to track it down for you. it was presented to me in sociology.)

The point is, if you have so many fans who are so far from being able to think for themselves that they are as obsessed with you as so many people in america are, I think you have a responsibility to make sure you are sending the right message.

As far as her lyrics... I'm not familiar with them except for the few videos I've seen in and around telephone (which is definitely not anti-materialistic). If they are anti-materialistic then I would be so so so so so pleased and happy. Could you show me an example of one of her lyrics that is anti-materialistic?

In regards to Gaga and her fans, anyone that goes to her concert knows what she is all about. They know that she is not just an image. I've seen videos of her speaking words of encouragement to her fans, and her interludes (particularly her "Manifesto of Little Monsters" interlude) at her concerts further enforce her message.

I find it really unnerving that individuals on this message board put down artists as if they know everything about them (when they evidently don't.) If you're going to criticize an artist (and trust me, there are other reasons to criticize Gaga besides her being "materialistic"), at least get your facts together.

Also, just curious, do you expect all famous people to dress like **** and not put any sort of effort into their appearance? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the vibe I'm getting. A lot of Gaga's fashion is either second-hand or from unknown designers. She is basically a medium for unknown designers to get word of their work out. I don't think she actually pays them for the clothes.
I think the main problem here is that the point I am making isn't coming across. I'm not going to do a bunch of research to find out what the facts about her are because I shouldn't have to. they should be clear. Very few people in america are going to do the research and that's the problem I have.
I wouldn't dislike her as much if people weren't so obsessed with her. But the fact that everyone is so obsessed with her gives her the responsibility to send a clear and positive message.

It sounds to me like maybe that is what she is trying to do, but considering that I and no one else I know (many of whom listen to her) know about her "message" and that we are well educated, free thinking people, I highly doubt that the throngs of drooling identity-challenged fans are getting the message clearly. I wish all of her fans were like you guys but... alas... i doubt it.

However... my feelings are beginning to change because of what i have learned about her. I like her more i suppose. But i still stand behind what I stated above, which is that it took my poking and prodding on an internet forum to even come across this information.

Haha touche! not only lesbian hugging but kissing, oh my! sorry I'm not so familiar with her god awful video that I know what happens at every second. I stand corrected.

Ok. Yes she is for materialism, captain obvious! She was brought up filthy rich. What makes Gaga special, and so damn popular is the fact that she can CONNECT with her fans, relate to them, inspire them to do more and be more. She is forward thinking and knows what she believes in. The meat covered bikini to me indicates exactly what Erica said about woman being looked at merely for their bodies, not everything else that makes them who they are. Gaga protests for gay rights, safe sex and above all being yourself. I always felt odd and an outcast throughout my entire life. No matter how many friends I had or guys I dated, I still felt very alone and weird. Gaga inspires me personally to go with it, because as long as you treat others with respect and love, being yourself is the best thing you could ever do, and I always have.

The reason people like her is because they see her in themselves. She worked incredibly hard to get where she is today and she never stops being gracious to the people that got her there. She may have been normal on the outside to her peers but she got to her 20's and decided to let out all her feelings and creativity. I wish I could achieve things the way she has.

On top of this, you may not like her music, but **** she can sing. Nuff' said.
Beautifully stated. However, perhaps you might like to go back and read a little more of the conversation we've been having.
I think it's great that she fights for all those things... but i still think she sends the wrong message to the many many people who merely watch her videos and don't bother to research her ideals or watch her interviews etc. I had previously stated that the problem with materialism in this country is the biggest problem for me and it happens to the the problem she doesn't address and about which she sends the completely wrong message. So everything you said is nice... i just don't care. I care about her materialistic message (or the obscurity of her "non-materialism") and I have the right to dislike her for any reason i choose.

Also, i never said I don't like her music. What i have said about her has nothing, at all, to do with her music. It has to do with her image, with which, she is obsessed.

I'm doing pretty well considering it's me against an army!
At least i have something to say and the ovaries to defend it. Unlike the folks who merely post and go "I hate her" and you guys just ignore them.

But yea, I love a good argument
and I think we have all learned something from it. I'm not incapable of admitting that I have been proven wrong on several counts during this conversation. But I still defend my main point.

Yeah but getting snotty and being rude in an argument doesn't really help your case.
