Maybe it is just because I'm indifferent to pop music? I very briefly worked in a music shop for a couple of months and we were given set playlists of new albums to play, one being Lady Gaga's 'The Fame' and I can genuinely say that it stood out to none of us as a great album. One of the better pop albums of that year, but nothing special.
I understand what you're saying about her music, but I wouldn't put it on the same list as Kesha. Or Beyonce.

Whether or not you're "indifferent" to pop, you must somehow be able to understand that Beyonce and Lady Gaga and Kesha are all on completely different levels.
Beyonce especially.
Not only are they different styles of music, but they're different feels, different abilities and different technicalities.
So if you're trying to speak musically, I cannot at all understand where you're trying to pull this from.

Yeah I think at a certain point you need to resign yourself to not being able to appreciate a given genre. Theres nothing wrong with it but if Katy Perry and Kesha (who I enjoy) seem on par with Gaga and beyonce for pop, I'd say give up the ghost.

Its the same reason I don't bother talking about techno. Its all a pacman soundtrack to me. The deal with pop is to find value in melody. In some regards, that a value in recycling. Any theory book, looking into melody is going to say its very easy to come up with some that are already being used.

In some respects its about layering melodies over other melodies, running them through different instruments, or giving them different roles.

I don't know many better pop songs than beyonces "sweet dream" or whatever the **** it was called. Its a monster. As for gaga, I don't know what song I'd pick but "just dance" or "paporazzi" are fairly high for me as a standout track.

When it comes to Lady Gaga, I constantly find myself saying "I don't get it", and I realize now that THAT is the point. It has always been the point. Confusion often yeilds some interesting things in pop culture, and I'm interested to see where this tranny leads the industry over the next few years.

Lady Gaga could have sung any of those songs.

Dont get me wrong, I'm a big Lady Gaga fan. I even went to her concert a couple of months ago. But I dont deny that her music is generically pop.
First of all, what's your definition of generically pop? Aside from something with catchy hooks, that is?

The techno euro-beats influence are actually coming FROM GaGa, which in turn came from early 90ish bands like Ace Of Base. She's setting a lot of trends in pop right now...the use of RedOne being one of them, but despite that, I think her music is pretty distinctive sounding by todays standards. Not masterful, but distinctive nontheless. You would certainly NOT hear Beyonce or Katy Perry penning and singlng songs like Speechless or Teeth, and she's the only artist right now putting really annoying, psudo-artisian words like 'vertigo schtick' into her music. Annoying as hell, but still...not generic. The only song on Fame Monster that has a subdued, conformist sound is Telephone, which is kind of understandable considering she wrote it for Britney Spears.

As much as I can appreciate that all the aforementioned artists are on different levels and abilities, as I said, unfortunately for me Lady Gaga just doesn't stand out as anything spectacular when compared to artists in the same genre. From my point of view, going on radio play (as that's generally the only time I listen to pop), most of Lady Gaga's material sounds like generic pop that, to be honest, anybody with her vocal ability could come along and belt out. And I appreciate she writes a lot of her own material, but not being into the whole pop genre particuarly, when all I hear is what's on the radio or what was given to us as a set playlist, it's difficult for me to distinguish her musically as something spectacular. Same as I can admit that Beyonce has one of the best voices around - doesn't mean I think her material is fantastic. And, unfortunately, for me most of Beyonce's and Lady Gaga's stuff, when played on the radio or TV just blends into a generic background for me, different as it may be from eachother.

Trust me, I've tried - I'd never try and slate an artist I haven't given a chance of listening to - but unfortunately my opinions haven't changed...

To an extent I agree, but I get a little sad because I can hold up my hands and say that I love 80s pop (though maybe more for nostalgic reasons??) so I don't want to have to give up on pop as a whole!

What does "it's a monster" mean?

I was less focused on how much they stand out to you and more focused on your rating of artists.
What I want to say is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion about any artist. But if you're going to talk about ratings or style here, it's quite obvious that Beyonce doesn't belong with Kesha or Katy Perry, and besides that one song they did together, Lady Gaga shouldn't be grouped with her either.
Any opinion is valid, I suppose, but I guess when you group them that way, all I can think is, "How can she not see the differences?"
And I know exactly what you mean about things standing out. I have a far more controversial opinion on that considering The Beatles don't stand out to me in a positive way.
I do know what you mean in a way, though.

If thats the case I'd say you may harbor a bias. I don't know really but if you like 80's pop, I assume Madonna, Prince, Jackson, then I don't know why you wouldn't like what's being put out today.

Some will tell you "A" can't hold a candle to "B" but thats a bias as well. Its generally got to do with 13 year old ****s being up in ****ing arms about how GaGa and Ke$ha are better than anything else, and if we don't agree we just don't get it. But whenever I hear that, I just imagine all the brutal heart-wrenching misery their going to experience before 10 years is over and I just smile.

The music is pretty great, but needless to say, you shouldn't be listening to it if you're hoping to get Zappa or The Pixies.

Edit: "its a monster" means its good on a level unseen in reality.
