As far as POP singers...... definitly Whitney Houston.

In GENERAL: Aretha Franklin, Karen Carpenter, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Donna Summer, and plenty others... but these are the main ones I can think of currently...

Karen Carpenter was a really good drummer player, the rest meh... none of them could dance like Amii Stewart could. And where would Whitney Houston be if Dolly Parton didn't write that song?

But this thread is about VOCALISTS. The thread is not asking who is the best female ARTIST.......Since this is the pop section I am assuming this thread is talking about POP stars and no other POP female singer had a voice like Whitney. She made all those covers and songs her own and her singing style has been very influential.

The first two is no where close to being exceptional. Dolores O'riordan however is a brilliant vocalist even to this day, thanks to seeing her live.

Sorry, Dolly Parton wrote "I Will Always Love You," it came from her mind and it will always be her song.

A lot of female singer have very good voices, not only Whitney. You think she is the all time best, I don't see the point arguing that. (I think Karen Carpenter had a more of an aesthetic sound to her voice and she seem to conveyed more real emotion.)
Whitney may have been influential, but was it for better or worse? Ever since she became popular it became more about style over substance. After she set the bench and since every other singer wanted out do the next - hit the highest note or bend a note up and down the scale to the point of ad nauseum. Just because a singer has the pipes doesn't make the song any much better.

You are right but if you ask most people, more will tell you that they know the Whitney much more than Dolly version. Plus Dolly did not have the strong voice that Whitney had. Although the Dolly version is great but Whitney's version is three times better than Dolly. Dolly knows it too. Whitney redid the song and made it her own. That is the truth.

BTW here is my list of best female vocalists.

Joss Stone
Natasha Bedingfield
Beyonce
Lalah Hathaway
Adele
Duffy
Leona Lewis
Mariah Carey
Whitney Houston
Candy Dulfer
Celine Dion
Delta Goodrem
Kelly Clarkson
Jennifer Knettles
Carrie Underwood
fergie
Jewel
Keyshia Cole
Diana Krall
