I play drums in a local band...Lars Ulrich plays with Metallica and has for over 25 years. Is he more of a musician than me?...I would say yes. That said...if Hilary Duff music is what you enjoy so be it. You like what you like.

Yes, and they are not artists either. They systematically recreate melodies for the entertainment of others, nothing more or less.

And if you look at musician as a performer of music, then yes, she is. If you see it as a composer of music, she's no more a musician than I am for writing that song back in 6th grade. But I refuse to call her an artist.

Pop records are judged by how catchy they are and how you can dance & sing along to them. They're not meant to be anything more. They can be , but it's not essential. If you can't see past that and give it credit for those things it's just snobbery on your part.

Personally I couldn't give a toss about Hilary Duff , but I will defend pop music as it's due to that I became the music fan I did.

Thanks.

I'm not huge into the latest music but most of it is targeted to a younger audience so it isn't going to satisfy certain people and that's fine. I agree, it doesn't mean she isn't an artist.

I don't see what being a musician has to do with anything.

So you've discounted opera singers.

what next people who sing in musicals?

Opera singers are artists. They create sounds with their voice, their instrument. And the tuning and practicing and delivering of their voice is an art!

C'mon, you can barely say Hilary Duff's vocal techniques are really that artful compared to an Opera singer... but each to their own. I really don't think Hilary Duff has much musical merit personally, but in retrospect to this thread she is still a pop star and she (as well as the songwriters and musicians that actually make the songs ) are making pop music and so I suppose this is a relevant point of discussion for the 'pop' board. The end.

she does not have any talent close to that of an operah singer,

I'm not comparing Duff to an Opera singer because I can't and won't. It's impossible because it's an entirely different style of music.

Unfair comparison.

Opera takes time mastering like any other type but you have to be suited for it. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if other 'famous' musicians couldn't pull off opera either.

She's in pop because that's where she fits. Who cares if she can't do anything outside that, who knows maybe she can, maybe she can't.

I think she's good at what she does.
