Did you just quote me and take out everything but the $ in 'Ke$ha'?

Every artist on the pop charts is out to make money. It's not a secret, their motive to make music and heavily market themselves as something different is to make as much money as they can.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty smart of me.
A lot of the music on the radio sounds the same. This is just an extreme example. I consider the real art of popular music the marketing.

Some people consider being a musician a job, rather than an art form. I'd sell out "to the industry" to be able to do what I want later in life.

The difference between the two is if you care about the music being good or not, right?

I find most of Katy Perry's music to be pretty standard mediocre pop but I do have a guilty pleasure for "Hot N Cold" and I'm starting to become addicted to "Teenage Dream."
Being hot is a bonus and bumps her up a notch from the rest of the current generation of young female pop artists.

I really don't think any Katy Perry fans care. I know I don't.

I don't think she's a complete sell out...most pop stars have a hunger for fame, money comes secondary...record labels, however, are all about money and marketing, and this is the reason why there are so many ''pop puppets''. Basically they use women such as Rihanna as a conduit for marketing and generating cold hard cash, and the ''puppet'' (using Rihanna as an example here), who craves fame for egotistical rather than financial reasons (money may be a factor too, but rarely the primary one for the puppet concerned), will relent to her record labels demands, carve her image to suit their needs etc, (for example, she had to attain permission from her record label to dye her hair red) and this symbiotic (or should I say parisitic?) relationship continues until her success diminishes, or she herself attempts to break free from the shackles of marketing. Britney Spears' mental breakdown is an example of the effect extensive puppeteering can have on an individual.

Katy Perry is semi-manufactured, utilising many popular producers to entice casual listeners with catchy hooks and whatnot, but she does co-write 90% of her material, and her pseudo-lesbian image is really what drew people's attention. It's all a bit bland, but it does paint a picture of her as at least capable enough to market herself shamelessly without constant supervision from her label. Her talent is limited though...poor vocal range, inability to emote, shouts to skip high notes and her songwriting is very poor...

Have to completely agree with this part, I have watched some live shows of hers, absolutely crud voice. I can sing her songs better than her.

Songwriting? She doesn't write her own songs as far as I know, it's just generic pop being pumped out by money making songwriters.

I like her new album (teenage dream), there are a lot of great songs in it. I think she has a great voice and knows how to use it.
