The Unashamedly Great Pop Records Thread

No bullshit , no genre arguements , no hatred.
Just great pop records....

Chris Farlowe - Out Of Time

Written by Jagger & Richards for him I actually think this is better than the Stones own version. The Manics did a pretty good cover of it too.

Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short

Normally I can't stand this band but their debut single was something pretty f*cking special. Franz Ferdi..who?

Japan - Ghosts

I've been listening to this band virtually non stop for the past 2 or 3 weeks. David Sylvian is an under-rated pop genius.

Blur - Girls And Boys

How the UK got over the death of Kurt Cobain in a matter of weeks.

Davey Moore 04-05-2008 09:20 AM

I really like that first video. The rest are just "ok"

Alfred 04-05-2008 10:15 AM

I know it's more/less pop-rock or folk-rock, but The Wallflowers' "Bringing Down The Horse" was a good one.

Edit: Stupid Youtube. The vids are still on the site. Those bastards.

Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

Molecules 04-05-2008 10:41 AM

haha. YES

Molecules 04-05-2008 10:50 AM

additional:

Ween

Jellyfish

the Three O'Clock

edit: can't forget Crowded House and Split Enz

Patrick Wolf "The Magic Position"

Brilliant composed and just brilliant. It travels such a wide spectrum of emotions and really should get much more praise than it does.

The Smiths "The Queen is Dead"

I don't care if its cliche I still consider this album the Smiths masterpiece.

The Magnetic Fields "69 Love Songs"

Kind of hard for me to know where of their albums to choose. i was brilliant and Holiday was so groundbreaking but I figure I'll go with the one that got me into them. I don't think anyone other than Stephin Merritt could've pulled this off without being pretentious or overly cheesy.

Jens Lekman "Night Falls Over Kortedala"

What to say about Jens? He's a genius lyricist who composes very unique songs and this album is full of witty romanticisms and melancholy, just how pop should be.

Elliott Smith "Figure 8"

Elliott Smith took his singer/songwriter abilities and combined them with his knack for great pop tunes in the way of the Beatles and Big Star and created what was his finest album.

The Passions - I'm In Love With A German Film star.

Not just a great pop song but one of my all time faves. One hit wonders but what a hit!

Prefab Sprout - Appetite

Great, simple pop music.

Joe Jackson - It's Different For Girls

I was about 8 when I first heard this and remember that the lyrics meant something, yet I was too young to understand any of it.

Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill

This song still sends shivers down my spine. It came out at a certain time in my life and it's simple yet eloquent rhythmn takes me right back there. A beautiful lady with a beautiful voice.

Talk Talk - Living In Another World

A few on these boards know of my love of TT and here is one of their tracks that was segueing into their experimental phase. I just adore this song

I will check out the ones I don't know and post mini reviews some time.

^ Ghosts...minimalism at it's best.
Although 'Ghosts' doesn't give any evidence of it, Mick Karn has to be one of the most under rated bassist too.
It's a shame he hasn't the credit he deserves.
