Personally, I think that most of their earlier songs such as those on the album 'The Black Parade' are far better than those on their newest album 'Conventional Weapons' but overall they're pretty awesome.

jesus christ this thread.

You do realise that The Black Parade doesn't exactly count as "their earlier songs", right? It's their third album. Their earlier stuff is ok but by that I mean the first 1-2 albums and corresponding b-sides.

llogann 10-31-2013 09:20 AM

My Chemical Romance?

I hear a lot of hate for My Chemical Romance. I personally like them a lot. I like that all of their albums are different from one another.

I mean, Gerard Way (their former lead vocalist) is definitely talented and outspoken. He can do some neat things with words that really shouldn't rhyme but flow pretty well in the songs, and Ray Toro is a great guitar player in my opinion. He's got a lot of control, a lot of talent. And really I just like the bands attitude.

I'm totally open to you guys telling me that My Chemical Romance is overrated, untalented, rubbish and etc. So tell me what you think.

GuD 11-01-2013 08:40 PM

Why is this in the punk section?

I don't hate MCR. It's not their fault millions of teenagers across the globe funded the commercialization of emo and pop punk after they made the big time. If I wasn't going through a prog-rock phase when they first blew up I probably would've liked them too. Their music is boring and over the top imo but they have a few decent riffs. I wouldn't play it on stage but Mikey Way's signature bass from Squier is pretty cool.

djchameleon 11-02-2013 06:40 AM

It's in the punk section because they are pop punk.

Are they not?

14232949 11-02-2013 09:38 AM

I'd say pop rock. I don't really see any elements of punk in their music.

Justthefacts 11-02-2013 09:59 AM

Black Parade is arguably one of the best rock records in the past ten years.

Wavestack 11-02-2013 12:51 PM

MCR peple: Do you like Nine Inch Nails?

If so, did you want to collaborate directly with them :O . :band::band::band::band:

I spent most of my childhood listening to MCR and for years I have feverishly practiced guitar so that one day I may be able to play even part of a MCR song. People say Hendrix is god I say MCR is god. O how I love everything they have ever done.

I am going to save this thread to my hard drive, print it out and give it to future generations.

That is insulting to pop punk. Dillinger Four, Menzingers, Mr.T Experience, Queers... Pop Punk fo sho. MCR? Not even in the early days. Hilariously over dramatic alt-rock is the closest thing to pop-punk I can stomach calling them.

Regardless of what you think about them and how beneath them you are. They are most definitely pop punk. They fit in with The Offspring, Sum 41, Simple Plan and the like.

Isbjørn 11-03-2013 09:48 AM

That makes pop punk so broad it loses all meaning, IMO.

This

gets lumped in with this:

Personally, I don't think My Chemical Romance sound that much like either.

Maybe The Black Parade does, but that's mostly just pretentious alt-rock as WhatEverDude labeled them. Haven't heard all of their earlier/later works, though, so I may be wrong, in fact, the only full album I've heard is The Black Parade.

I'd label them "alternative rock with post-hardcore influences in their early works, suitable for moping".

GuD 11-03-2013 07:55 PM

^Exactly.

Most of the popular "alternative" radio acts circa 2000-06ish were just pop bands dressed up (sort of...) like punks/emokids to create a trend and sell records. It's a cycle that happens with every generation to every genre of music unfortunately. Calling MCR pop-punk is like calling Duran Duran punk. Granted, they do both have some ties to real punk music and I'd hardly believe FOB never heard of Descendents but lumping them in the same group is just not accurate. There's a difference between a marketed image and the culture that birthed it's blueprint.

Pop punk is already a pretty loose umbrella that includes a lot.

This is from their first album

All you need to fit into the Pop Punk criteria is to be an offshoot of alternative rock, with pop melodies, speedy punk tempos, chord changes and loud guitars.

I agree with some of that. Those bands were a mixture of emo/pop punk but some of their songs could still be considered pop punk imo.

Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Paramore fit more closely with MCR.

Isbjørn 11-04-2013 06:40 AM

I'd consider Green Day legit pop punk, at least Dookie and earlier (though Dookie shouldn't be considered punk in a non-music manner). No, I'm Not Okay, is from MCR's second album, and I don't think they sound that much like Fall Out Boy and Panic!, at least not on their debut.

llogann 11-04-2013 09:05 AM

Well to be fair, Gerard Way said earlier on in the band that he'd consider the band aggressive pop. They're not trying to claim they're in a punk-pop band. People just call them pop-punk because they share a lot of elements with it. It's really hard to put a label on them. Every album sounded so much different from the one before that it's just difficult.

All of this said, I think the least punk thing to do is to limit what punk really is. I know they have a lot of punk influences for sure, hence why you hear some of those elements in the songs.

Actually in one of their interviews with AP it was confirmed that Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is loosely base on Brian De Palma's, Phantom of the Paradise.

Isbjørn 11-04-2013 09:17 AM

A lot of artists deny labels. Motörhead said they weren't metal, and about every one of the original emo bands claimed not to be emo. My Chemical Romance aren't pop punk not because they reject the term, but because they don't sound like Descendents.

djchameleon 11-04-2013 12:56 PM

Is your new avatar related to Nekrogoblikon?

Isbjørn 11-04-2013 01:18 PM

it's a metal band. Just tell me where your avatar is from.

Isbjørn 11-05-2013 06:25 AM

It's just a mockery of the black metal stereotype, it's not really from anywhere.

Pop-punk is such a loose term in regards to other sub-genres of music that I don't think it can be judged that way. I'm not claiming they're pop-punk for a second, I'm just saying that comparing them to one specific pop-punk act and saying that since they don't sound like them they can't be pop-punk is being a little too exclusive.

Isbjørn 11-08-2013 11:25 AM

Descendents was just an example. Could be Millencolin, Screeching Weasel, you name it, but not My Chemical Romance IMO.

llogann 11-11-2013 08:26 AM

Alright. I can hop on board with that.

RougeOF 12-07-2013 08:43 AM

I heard of them a while before they quit making music. I listened to them and started likening hem literally a month or two before they quit. It really really sucked.

Oh my, that makes me feel less bad about when I got into them. It was a couple of months before they broke up, but I checked them out a year prior. I thought Na Na Na was metal and closed the video (???).

Isbjørn 01-21-2014 10:38 AM

Don't see anything wrong with metal, though

TheFedsAreAfterMe 01-23-2014 09:34 PM

This should be in the 'emo,' subforum

Isbjørn 01-26-2014 08:57 AM

No, don't worry about that

My Chemical Romance question for all you creative peoples ^.^

So you know how Green Day's album "American Idiot" has a story line to go along with all of the songs? I was wondering if anyone could help me come up with a story plot to go along with one of My Chem's albums (set aside Danger Days, because it already kind of has a story). I've been thinking, but my brain just wont shift into gear -.- Thanks guys! ^.^

LOVE MCR :) I personally prefer ' 3 cheers ... ' as album !!

gsrox 04-12-2015 01:46 PM

My Chemical Romance rules. "Welcome To The Black Parade" pulled no punches which is why it's a knockout.

jammo 04-25-2015 06:47 PM

Gone past their sell by date in my opinion.

gsrox 05-26-2015 07:29 PM

Try to listen to "Teenagers" without busting a gut laughing.
