The Pop Reemergence of 2007

Does anyone else feel like the heavy hitters of Pop was trying to revive it this year back to it's previous form? Take a look at all of the Pop artists that released albums this year. Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Vanessa Carlton and coming soon Spice girls but that's probably going to be a best of with three new tracks. Also coming soon Michael Jackson's best of produced by all the heavy hitters and probably one or two new tracks.

I haven't given it any thought, but you've got a point. I doubt it can knock hip-hop off the top, though.

Regardless, I won't be listening. :tramp:

Pop is the default setting of the music industry.

When there's not much happening that's when pop gets it's biggest pushes.

actually hip hop is on the demise, i posted an article in the rap section about it awhile ago. urban is right though, although i personally feel (along with many people on this board i assume) there has actually been a really good amount of quality releases this year.

When I say not much happening I mean as far as movements go rather than individual good albums. You'll always have good music coming out , but from a mainstream point of view there's not really that much going on.

joyboyo53 10-31-2007 02:09 PM

I see, yes that is quite different.

Michael Jackson has had a ridiculous number of "Best of" albums. This will be like the fifth. It is time to stop and just make a new album already.

As for Vanessa Karlton, I wouldn't put her in that group at all.

Pop is not really a genre I like or am knowledgeable about. To me it has always been at a constant and seemingly the most popular genre of music, but we all know different!

What are you talking about? When Michael Jackson puts on a new album people shun his efforts....do you remember his last new album? The one where he had a little bit of a hip hop edge to it?

Why wouldn't Vanessa Carlton belong in that group? You don't think she's Pop?

i have noticed that
& i really have no idea why all these people are coming out with albums again when neither of them have had a hit in god knows when
sad to say but i think britney spears would be the most likely to sell more albums
more than half of those other people up there shouldve given up a long time ago

To be popular one must be a mediocrity.

for the most part that is true but you don't have to be.

I disagree with that.

um.. That is why it is called "pop" for "popular". Anything can be pop music, including rock music if it is popular.

MJ has not had an album since the year 2001. In the world of pop music, that is a VERY long time. Nevertheless, the album still sold over 2,000,000 copies in America alone. That is not being "shunned" by any definition of the word, even if critics did not like the album.

And I wouldn't consider Vanessa Karlton in that category because she is a hardly a "heavy-hitter". She only had one popular CD (which I might add still sold less than the MJ CD in question). Plus, she along with Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne are credited with taking pop away from the "traditional" way- such as the "Backsteet Boys" and "Spice Girls".

number of albums sold doesn't equal quality of album.....everyone that bought the album was purely because of his name....they were disappointed with the results and actually agreed with the critics. That is being "shunned"

Whether you like it or not....Vanessa Carlton is Pop, along with Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne. There is no such thing as "traditional" pop. Just like you said earlier....pop is whatever is popular at the time.....regardless of genre. Look at the Top 40. Every artist on the Top 40 Billboard list is Pop.
