Beach Boys funking rule, bizniatch!

She's My Little Deuce Coupe was the first rock song I'd ever heard, it is also my first musical memory of any sort.

Merkaba 03-26-2007 02:29 AM

They're a really relaxed group. Like, I can't say I like much of their produce, but you know, props on some of their hits. I recently found they're really good on a long bus trip too...

Infact they're 2nd only to the "Na na na nana na...na HEY JUDE"!!!

....Judy Judy juday Juday Judayyyoowww!!!!

And perhaps Tubthumping by Chumbawumba. But no, a real chill group.

My dad always had atleast one of their albums in this truck when I was younger and I loved every thing I heard from them. It's been a while since I've given them a listen though.

The Beach Boys were actually a far more creative, serious musical outfit than what many people give them credit for. Many focus mostly, or entirely, on their surf-rock origins, and forget their creative endeavors such as the baroque-pop of Petsounds, and other stuff from circa that era. Much of it, far from being upbeat, positive, chill music, is actually pretty melancholy and depressing.

Brian Wilson's a genius.

Well, it's not usually compared with The White Album, but usually to Sgt Pepper. But you might be right there.

It's not better than Sgt Pepper at all, however.

Yes it is ^

I do agree Wilson is a musical genius though and I'm glad this thread has focused on him.
One of musics more interesting individuals... completely off his head.

Rainard Jalen 03-26-2007 03:05 PM

Some of those melodies he crafted out were just BEAUTIFUL. Esp. Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows. There are others, but the names evade me right now. Those two songs though have some pretty amazing things going on.

Just the mere mention of 'God Only Knows' fills my head full of music.

Edit: Not bad for a song that took him less than 10 minutes to write.

Lady_funk 04-14-2007 02:22 PM

The Beach Boys rock socks!!!!!!!:)

sleepy jack 07-03-2007 03:33 PM

I have no idea why I didn't come into the thread earlier to repeat the truth.

MHDTV 07-04-2007 07:06 PM

While Brian Wilson is clearly a musical genius, as has been said multiple times, I just find that the vocals conflict with the music. So Revolver>>Sgt. Peppers<>Pet Sounds>>>White Album.

I have always loved the Beach Boys. Pet Sounds is the greatest.

The Beach Boys

One of the greatest American rock/pop bands. Lead by the legendary Brian Wilson these guys put out some tremendous material. The much heralded Pet Sounds stands as one of the greatest albums ever. No one captured teen anguish, fun like the Beach Boys. Some of their greatest songs to me were God Only Knows, The Warmth of the Sun, and Caroline, No. These songs in particular were some of the greatest/saddest love songs ever written. Paul MCartney of The Beatles once mentioned that he believes God Only Knows was the greatest pop song ever written. The more popular songs speak for themselves, classic such as Don`t Worry Baby, Good Vibrations, Little Surfer Girl, Barbara Ann, the list goes on. The intricate layering of vocals by these guys was beautiful. Over the past few years I`ve really come to appreciate The Beach Boys as putting out some of the greatest songs ever. Anyone else a big fan of these guys? Favorite songs?....

When The Beatles released Sergeant Pepper's a year later, it's been said that Wilson sank into a deep depression on hearing it.

He needn't have bothered.

Nowhere near as good as Pet Sounds.

jackhammer 08-21-2007 03:14 PM

I have never really dug The Beach Boys. I was dissapointed when I heard PET SOUNDS as it is at the top of a lot of critics lists. It has been about five years since I heard it. I may give it another listen when I can be bothered to find a link. Good Vibrations is a great track though.

sleepy jack 08-21-2007 03:46 PM

Why is this in rock and metal.../moves back

jackhammer 08-21-2007 04:11 PM

The same strange logic that has put THE SMITHS vs THE CURE in a pop forum-a bit screwed methinks.

Don't know why , the first I ever heard of either bands were in Smash hits & on kids TV shows in the 80s.

jackhammer 08-21-2007 04:32 PM

Ask any pop fan about either band and chances are they will not have heard of them. In the 80's maybe, but even then they were slightly off the mainstream. If they are pop then so are THE CLASH and SEX PISTOLS if we apply the same logic.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-21-2007 04:46 PM

I hardly think the same applies to the Sex Pistols or The Clash.
The point I was making was that both bands were making pop records and their main exposure was from pop magazines & tv shows. When I first started buying rock magazines in the late 80s I didn't see anything of either The Smiths or The Cure in them anywhere.
They're maybe not considered your typical pop act today but back then when your typical pop bands were people like Echo & The Bunnymen , The Icicle Works , Aztec Camera & people like that the pop tag is the one that fits the best.

jackhammer 08-21-2007 04:54 PM

Yes, i agree that their original exposure was these magazines, but in hindsight; are they pop bands? BLOODFLOWERS can hardly be called a pop album, but you raise some well argued points. You need to watch some more films Urban because I think you have the inclination for deep analysis and I would be interested in your views.

Well this goes back to your genre argument.

Does it make them not a pop band just because they expand their sound to incorporate other things ;)

jackhammer 08-21-2007 05:12 PM

I think pop music IS NOT about progression, and the minute a band steps out of the SAFE zone, then they acquire a different badge of honour. Is it right? Maybe not. The Beatles are still classed as a pop band, but their later music;even to this day, is not pop. So what is pop then? Are we all really pop music fans? Perhaps we all have an inflated sense of oneself?

Thanks, saw this BB thread in the pop forum after I already posted the thread in the rock forum. Thanks for the merge.

McCartney also stated that "Pet Sounds" is his favorite album of all time, and it influenced him to begin the "Sgt. Pepper" project. Without "Pet Sounds", the "Sgt. Pepper" album would've never been.

They're certainly not my favorite band of that era, but there's no denying they were much more than just a "surf pop" band.

Blue Sunday 08-23-2007 06:45 AM

Also Brian Wilson mentioned that "Rubber Soul" by The Beatles was his inspiration for Pet Sounds. They had a pretty healthy rivalry it seems and both bands at this point seemed to have fed off of the other.

It was "Rubber Soul" that inspired Wilson to compose "Pet Sounds".

"Pet Sounds" was released a few months BEFORE "Revolver", so it wouldn't have been possible for Brian to have been influenced by it.

Blue Sunday 08-23-2007 07:56 AM

My apologies. Knew it was one of the two, gambled and lost.

Brock Landers 08-23-2007 11:24 PM

Brian Wilson is a genius. Pet Sounds is masterful.
