Might as well throw my hat in the Pet Sounds ****ing rules ring. One of those preciously rare albums you just find a fault with. Amazing stuff

The Beach Boys are the band that I've became most obsessed with over the years. I went something like almost 7 months listening to nothing else pretty much. I have everything up until Wild Honey, considering everything after 'Smile' is trash.

That said, Pet Sounds is amazing, and 'Smile' comes very close. Musically I think I prefer 'Smile', but 'Pet Sounds' has much more coherency, and is thus easier to listen to. Im going to go ahead and rank all of their pre-smiley smile albums now:

Pet Sounds 100/100
Smile 99/100
Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!!) 90/100
Today85/100
All Summer Long 83/100
Surfer Girl 77/100
Little Deuce Coupe 75/100
Surfin' USA 60/100 (If only for the song 'The Lonely Sea')
Shut Down Vol. II 55/100
Surfin' Safari 45/100

The Beach Boys felt inferior to The Beatles and were always trying to prove themselves. They had some good songs like California Girls.

The Pet Sounds Sessions (4 disc experience) is worth checking out for any die hard Pet Sounds fans. You really feel like you're in the studio with them.

Brian Wilson's album Smile is a good next step. Great album.

Brian's 'smile' is dogged down by over-production, his crappy voice, and overall, feels way too campy. The original Beach Boys' Smile sessions however, are amazing, and definately a good place to go next.

Also, their albums 'Today' and 'Summer Days' have some Pet Soundsy songs on them.
