Morrissey is awesome. The Smiths, of course, were a brilliant band, but I think he's had a tremendous solo career.

This is something I thought was a lot of fun to read, and other Morrissey fans should enjoy:

Quote:
In 1981 a guy named Robert Mackie was pen-pals with a guy named Steven Patrick Morrissey. Sometime in the late '80s Mr. Mackie photocopied the letters into a fanzine called "Words by Morrissey", which he then made available to anyone for the cost of postage.

Sometime in the late '90s I typed up all of these letters and posted 'em on my website, but a few years later I accidentally deleted the file from my web server. So, i'm now re-posting the letters; for the first time ever on the blog.

All spelling and punctuation marks are Morrissey's.
Letters From Morrissey

Pretty interesting and amusing reading. He's an odd mix of insecurity, mopiness and extroversion. I guess that wasn't too hard to tell from his music.

Hehe yeah i've read them, just confirms that he is easily the most difficult person ever.
His handwriting is the greatest writing i've ever seen.

I agree w/ zeek. The Smiths are much better. "How Soon Is Now" trumps any of Morrissey's solo material.

I love the use of 7 inch vinyls in the shoot. Inspired.

Morrissey sings the same melody in every song. Hear one song and you've heard them all. He just sings the Major 3rd of the key over and over and over and over...

I think one of the main reasons people listen to Morrissey is to listen to what he sings rather than the way he sings it.

If your listening to him expecting some technically gifted singing then you're totally missing the point.

Default Solo Morrissey Suggestions

Well, I know that there are many who enjoy his debut record, Viva Hate, but Your Arsenal is an absolutely fantasic record. It doesn't sound as Smiths-like as Viva Hate, it sounds fresh and Morrissey really sounds as he's enjoying himself fronting a rockabilly/glam sound. I would also highly suggest Bona Drag, which has all the great one-off singles he released between 1989 and 1990, as well as Viva Hate singles and b-sides. Its very well done compilation, which almost flows like a studio album. The compilation is full of colourful, humorous pop songs. I've heard really positive comments on Vauxhall & I, which includes quite a few classic Morrissey moments. One to avoid would be Kill Uncle. Its rather sluggish and underproduced. So thumbs up on Your Arsenal, Bona Drag, Vauxhall & I and Viva Hate.
