I liked her better when she was with No Doubt. Her "Holla Back" song didn't even make sense to me. |

...but I realized due to your post that I'd never heard "Cool," and so I gave it a listen yesterday. And, I must say, I liked the song very much! I don't recall hearing many semi-positive songs about relationships after they break down, and I like the way "Cool" combines sadness, longing, regret, and happiness when describing the post-relationship friendship. It's a great nostalgia song and works especially well paired with the video, which shows the memories of their being a couple (all that they once had that was lost for some inexplicable reason) much more clearly than those memories could be shown through the song alone. I feel the song describes accurately the complications that result when issues in a friendship aren't resolved. Musically, the song works for me because it starts with pretty music reminiscent of sweetly sad circus music (due to the bells and violins and is that a mandolin?). The introduction sets the mood of yearning for something. Once the beat sets in, I especially like the rhythm guitar. The song is a little bland when not paired with the video, but together they work synergistically to create an emotion and perspective that I recognize from actual life. I like the lyrics, too, especially the "I know we're cool" line, since we can tell from the video that this isn't really true since their relationship isn't without tension. Despite that, they are trying to be glad for each other and not let the sadness break through the apparent happiness too much. I felt this song was much more realistic in its mood (even if the ulta-rich Lady GaGa sort of setting is completely unrealistic) than many of Gwen Stefani's other songs, where she seems to want to present an in-your-face sort of attitude. "Cool" is a reminder that sometimes you can't get what you want, and you just have to deal with that the best you can. That seems very honest to me. Despite its fairy tale setting, the song/video doesn't present a fairy tale story in which everyone ends up perfectly happy. Finally, I felt Gwen's acting was very good, because when she looks happy, her face really lights up and is a delight to watch, and when she is sad, you can tell this just by one look at her face. I also feel she is beautiful, so she's easy to look at! Seeing the various emotions pass over her face or expressed through her body language was riveting. The song gave me chills, and when a song does that I know it was a success for me. It made me sad. Yeay! Gwen Stefani - "Cool" One song by her that I do like Gwen Stefani - Cool - YouTube
