Big Star

There are loads of fans on 70s rock on these boards so why don`t this lot have a thread showing them love?

Is it because they didn`t sell zillions of records ?
Is it because they wern`t close personal friends of the Beatles?
Is it because they don`t have a song played every 2 minutes on some 2 bit radio station around the world somewhere?
Is it because they didn`t have a guitarist who always gets voted in 'best guitarist' lists despite not having made any decent records for 30 years?

Like recording 3 albums of sheer beauty isn`t enough these days.

So yeah all you classic rock fans , stop jerking off to stairway to heaven for 5 mins & check out the genius of Alex Chilton for a change.

Nobody checked them out yet?

PHILISTINES !!!!!!!!!

Sabgoat 01-21-2006 06:27 PM

well i've listened to this band and i think there great. i can really see where alot of the musicans today get some of there great taste, because alot of there songs (that i've heard so far) are wonderful. i see no reason why they couldn't have been just as great or greater then alot of the 70's rock group's. so now after hearing them and saying that i wonder what was wrong with the music industry back then and wrong with the listeners for this band to not be that well known. *nods head in shame*

thank you urban for getting me into them.. without hearing your geat taste in music, i would be worried that my own musical taste would die.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-21-2006 06:29 PM

Sarcasm

Honestly , the lengths I go to to make sure there`s an active thread on this band on this forum.

Alex Chilton should pay me

Big Star

are pretty good for a pop band. If there's a thread on them already I couldn't find it.

boo boo 06-03-2006 12:33 PM

Third/Sister Lovers is an amazing record, recomend it for everyone... Though it's not as pop oriented as Big Star's earlier works.

cardboard adolescent 06-03-2006 12:54 PM

Indeed. I dig it.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-03-2006 01:23 PM

I made a thread about them a while back

Dunno why I bothered though :(

yes and why did you bother?

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-03-2006 01:25 PM

Some silly idea about this being a music forum

cardboard adolescent 06-03-2006 01:31 PM

I think I stumbled upon it and decided to check 'em out, but then I couldn't find it again.

I hate that the stupid search engine won't let you search for words shorter than four letters.

try typing this next time you search...

Alex Chilton Is God

;)

cardboard adolescent 06-03-2006 01:35 PM

Yup, there it is. That's funny, because I searched star and I didn't see it.

Big Star

I didn't really know where to put this, but they were power-pop so I figured i'd throw in here, especially seeing as this forum needs some positive threads. Awhile ago #1 Record, from strummer I think? Anyway, i'd been interested in them because Elliott had covered Thirteen and Nighttime, they're really good. Thirteen is probably my favorite song <.<

Recommendations:
Thirteen
When My Baby's Beside Me
The Ballad of El Goodo

mods wake up!

right-track 05-08-2007 11:34 AM

I think this is the first time I've ever seen this thread.
Big Star sound interesting...I want a first album listen recommendation please.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-08-2007 11:44 AM

They only did 3

No 1 , Radio City & Sister Lovers.

I think Radio City is the best one , but only just

right-track 05-08-2007 12:32 PM

I found a Big Star download, it has 66MB on it, which is pretty big.
Not sure what's on it though...maybe all 3?

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-08-2007 12:42 PM

Well the first 2 were released together on a single CD so maybe it's a rip of that.

Moon Pix 05-26-2007 12:31 PM

Chan Marshall got me into them by covering "Nighttime." I havent heard the first two albums but Id definitely say that Third/Sister Lovers goes beyond the definition of pop. Its such an eclectic album and its one of those that I revisit from time to time. A classic and far better in my opinion than Berlin which people try to lump it in with as being a depressing record.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-26-2007 03:15 PM

I just found Chris Bell's solo album on a blog full of ABBA albums.

Strange.

Asta 06-01-2007 11:20 AM

Urban, I Am the Cosmos is a great album. Have you picked up In Space, and if so is it any good. Also how is the live Album. I have #1 Record, Radio City and Sister Lovers(isnt that from David Crosby's Triad)but have not picked up anything else.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-01-2007 12:30 PM

I've never heard In Space , I might get around to listening to it one day but i'm usually skeptical about albums by bands reforming. I'd much rather check out the huge amount of Alex Chilton solo albums that are out because i've not heard any of them.

The Live album is really good , but it's not actually a proper live album it's them playing live for a radio show and has interviews with the band inbetween songs.

Asta 06-01-2007 01:28 PM

I found a copy of Bach's Bottom at a used record store. It's not great but at the same time it is not terribe, Bangkok is a great song.

lesssalt 06-26-2007 12:56 PM

I like the The Ballad of El Goodo version by Evan Dando. Didn't Big Star put out a new record last year? Has anyone heard it?

pocofan1 07-28-2007 04:00 PM

My first post here, but Big Star is a recently discovery for me. After hearing Radio City I started kicking myself in the rear. I could have been enjoying these guys for decades. Excellent band. Favorite Big Star song-Back Of the Car.

Rubberchicken 03-17-2008 04:02 AM

Great band.. Alex Chilton is god indeed.
Gotta love Jeff Buckleys cover of kangaroo. This thread inspired me to dig it out and listen to it (mystery white boy tour version)!

Spidersaretoads 03-19-2008 10:05 PM

I wish sometimes people knew Alex Chilton's own songs instead of covers or being the name of a replacements song

cardboard adolescent 03-05-2009 08:14 PM

#1 Record is so good... Feel is such a chilling song.

midnight rain 03-28-2009 03:32 PM

So I just listened to #1 Record/Radio City and I have to say their incredible! The harmonies and guitar in both albums are superb, I'm having a tough time deciding which of the two I prefer. #1 Record seems to deliver more consistently high quality songs while Radio City's best songs tend to be better than #1 Record's. Both are fantastic albums, I'm now working on checking out other material released by Big Star and their members; so far I'll be looking for:

Big Star Live - Big Star
Third/Sister Lovers - Big Star
I Am the Cosmos - Chris Bell
In Space - Big Star

Is there anything I should add to or take off of this list?

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-28-2009 04:12 PM

Add 2 of Alex Chiltons solo albums

Bach's Bottom & Like Flies On Sherbet
