Duran Duran in Costa Rica.
Saw them a few months ago. Still as good as they were back in the day.
Any 1980s retro fans out there? Richard . |
Some, but do not like living in the past. I do recall the haydays of Duran Duran. Might look around for a Greatest Hits CD.
Matter of fact, I am listening to a MP3 translation of a classic hit right now, I saw the Sign by Ace of Base. |
Love their old stuff...their newer stuff, not so much. But they still rock as a live band, oddly enough.
|
Save a Prayer is my fav Duran Duran Song
|
A view to a kill.
|
Duran Durans musical influence?.........Pink Floyd apparently. I used to like them when I was a lad and have a couple of albums still floating around. I have'nt played them for a long while though.
|
O.K. so I had a Duran Duran purse, yeah I know but I used to love this band back in the day. Save a Prayer was my favorite song and Girls on Film was another fav. I thought Simon Le Bon was hot and his name was so cool!
|
The greatest of the 80s new romantic, glam-influenced bands. I love the Rio albums escapism and colour its like an MGM musical as an 80s pop album. Save a Prayer, Girls on Film, Ordinary World, The Reflex, all classic pop. I recently got the Arcadia record. Not bad.
|
sorry for bumping an old thread but now I have their entire discog and can give a reasoned view of them
listening to Thank You now and it's pretty fun they do massacre The Doors and Led Zep, though |

Thank you The Replacements, Husker Du, R.E.M., Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Camper Van Beethoven.... for you showed me that the 80's were amazing, just need to turn off the radio. |

I'm listening to Big Country by "Big Country" from the 80s as we speak. So yeah, I have a place for that era in my personal discography. I always liked the funk bassline aspect to their music, and others from the 80s New Wave and Pop era as well. You might be able to suggest that the (80s) music brings a certain amount of "sophistication" associated, when considering certain bands and artist music from that particular era. Like "Sting" for example, he wrote music on that (80s) level in my opinion. |

What sticks in my mind about Duran Duran is that often their songs seemed to be about shallow topics. "Girls on film," "Wild boys, wild boys, wild boys," "Hungry like a wolf" all irritated me when I was a teen because of the simple, narrowly focused subject matter. I'll try listening to the bassline in their music to appeciate it more. I did like a few songs. I liked "Rio" for the sound of it and for one poetic line: "Just like that river twisting through the dusty land." I also like the feeling of aloneness in their song "Save a Prayer." I hadn't watched the video before today. I was pleased with it: it isn't glitzy and stupid like many of their videos seem to be. It felt more like an honest documentary of someone's life...presumably her day after the one night stand...and seemed very personal, for example by showing her feet sinking into the sand and the way she felt the bark of a tree. I hadn't expected to see this sensitivity in a Duran Duran video. I've listened to portions of around ten of their newer songs. None have snagged my interest enough to make it through a whole song. I used to like them a hell of a lot, but now they don't really do anything for me as a listener. Still a few decent hits, but not much more. (Like most 80's pop!)

i thought Astronaut was a very strong comeback
and the 2 albums following it weren't bad at all |
I don't think that is an official video for "Save a Prayer." I've seen two official versions. Anyway, it's a great song, maybe the band's best. I also have a special fondness for "All She Wants Is" and "Ordinary World." Duran Duran does the wall of sound well on many songs. Credit probably goes to Nick Rhodes and the band's choice of producers.
