Popularity is a garbage way to establish an artist's quality because of the many superior ways to do so. Even though brilliant artists can be popular, terrible artists have also been consistently popular which soils popularity as a quantifier for objectively approaching a subjective medium like a dumbass. It is very straightforward and you are a slave to culture to be so confused by it.

No, artists YOU think are terrible have been consistently popular. But the consensus is they are not terrible. Which goes back to my point that you don't like that perspective because it contradicts your personal taste.
