Still no leakage yet. I'm anxious, abnormally so that there are no flac copies on slsk yet.

EDIT: Downloading Flac version right now as I speak! I'm very excited!

EDIT 2: I'm stuck on Aisatsana, It's so beautiful. I've maybe listened it it 10 times by now, but I've yet to even give the other songs a second playthrough.

I'm giving it a solid 4/5 for now, maybe my opinion will change in the future though. It's a great album, and it if it weren't for the hype I think people would be a little less harsh on it. Same with Tomorrow's Harvest, a lot of people were "meh" about it but if it had come out a few years earlier people wouldn't be such cocks about it.

This is some of the best stuff I have heard in the last few years.

The quality of the meat* of this album is superb. These tracks are constantly hypnotic. The array of catchy tunes and intricate grooves and synths are a wonderful sight to behold.

*(aka album MINUS 180db, fz pseudotimestretch, aisatsana). These tracks feature a sound that just isn't what I look to Aphex Twin for.

Concept 7 12-04-2014 09:28 AM

it's pretty cool all round as is most of his stuff.

I really enjoyed it, I was really digging a lot of the base work, generally solid overall.

4/5

Plainview 12-09-2014 05:56 AM

Enjoyable but lacking some of the substance of his earlier stuff. It's always hard to put a finger on what works and what doesn't when it comes Aphex Twin, and a couple of the tracks divert from his usual sound, which isn't entirely a bad thing, but I'm not instantly in love with this. Still a generally great work though, so I think it deserves a solid 4/5.

I was planning to buy this album. How's the compression on it?

Menro 12-30-2014 03:52 AM

Syro is a great album. It's not flawless but it does provide a number of amazing tracks to boot. So I'm giving this a definate 4/5.

I really like the song produk 27 it reminds me of some of Squarepusher's stuff from budakhan mindphone but with something extra. The two Circlont6a songs are great and the closer, aisatsana, feels like a closer.
I'm not too sure about the song 180db_, It's not unlistenable but it really isn't as good as everything else you get.

Wire Magazine gave this album of the year. Not feeling it. This type of repititious electronic beat oriented dance music, drum and bass or intelligent dance music or whatever you want to call it ran its course in the early '90's or even earlier. I think people want to think it's smart like Kid A or something but isn't it really just the same old same old same old?

Robbe264 01-03-2015 03:19 PM

Good album, not really my cup of tea, but it's still a lovely album for the 1st listen.
Definetly going to listen to it again, maybe i will get more into it then!

3/5

I think it's just about the least repetitive album I've ever heard. Sure, there are common refrains, but there are always well placed intricacies that constantly keep me involved and interested. If you enjoy dense, headphone-centric electronic, it doesn't really get better than this.

Sequoioideae 01-03-2015 10:07 PM

The only repetitive track tracks on this album are Aisatsana and 180db, the latter obviously the weakest on the album, but it was more in vain of 90's electronic like mentioned.

OccultHawk 01-04-2015 12:00 PM

Schoenberg forgoes repetition.

The two tracks I never listen to. They aren't what I'm looking for when I listen to Aphex Twin, and they aren't particularly well done either.

I love Aisatsana, especially the pauses where you can hear the sounds bouncing around the piano. The relation between the notes and the low bass note at the end gives me chills. It's even more wicked when it's played via a swinging midi piano.

This edged out St. Vincent as my album of the year. I'm a huge fanboy, so take that with a grain of salt, but aside from 180db, this is perfection (and even that cut has its merits, however slim). Aisatsana took me completely by surprise and I'm in love with it. It's so gorgeous!

Suzy Ecto by Call Super is probably a good album to check out by people who like Syro.

I think it's more interesting myself but that's not the point.

I guess we are different types of listeners. That album is solid but Syro is like top 10 albums all time for me.
