There were a LOT of different reactions to it. A lot of them were because his song was 'Black Skinheads" and they didn't think it was supposed to be about being black. And a lot were that he was in rap (which is dominated by black people) and that it was not punk enough etcetc. i didn't see many reactions about it not being mainstream, especially since studs are pretty much everywhere right now. Claire's, American Eagle, Payless, you name it, you can find studs there. So why attack kanye specifically? you know?

Ohhh I gotcha, yeah that sounds pretty shifty, maybe because they want to take back the word skinhead from how it sounds, which is whack. And studs are definitely wayyy in fashion, really a lot of punk designs are, so it is pretty weird for them to get pissed about Kanye in that sense, though i do imagine that if the face of AE or Claire's came on the TV adorned with studs and homemade piercings (Claire's could defintely go this route) they'd probably be pretty pissed too. Kanye's an easy target because he's ridiculously popular, i could see this same thing happening to Lil Wayne for skateboarding or even, to take race out of it, Eminem or Nickelback or 1D if they assumed Punkwear.
I don't see the problem with rappers trying a punk look though, their very beginnings are extremely similar so why the h8. I want to say it's just how materialistic mainstream Hip Hop (Kanye included) can be, but Punk is involved with certain high fashions (if i'm not mistaken which i could be) and Kanye is very into that, so there lies a problem innate in the system. Also listened to this again, liked the beats even more, still thought Kanye sounded terrible, although "New Slaves" still has some great verses and insight (involving fashion no less).

I just can't believe they're holding on this tightly to a fashion statement (about as unpunk as it gets) from almost 40 years ago.
EDIT: I realllly like Bound 2, it's the perfect way to wrap up Kanye's minimal album in a retrospective way.

I agree!
It's funny, I didn't love Bound 2 at first, but Sansa was always listening to it in plug.dj and I really started to love it. |

You could argue that it's cuntish to do that but I can't see any evidence of racism based off this, could just be that they think he's a cunt? Kanye can't play the victim card over it though, let's not forget some of the rubbish he has came out with like white people shouldn't use slang until it's a year old or whatever it was, and that white people should make 'white' music. I thought Drake was a twat for wearing Stone Island tbh. |

just sayin' so its ridiculous especially since it's very unpunk to alienate someone who is obviously a marginalised person. I grew up on punk & post punk and I think his use of "skinhead" and his studded jackets whatever are totally awesome. I've always thought of punk and rap being one in ethos. I think not realising this makes one ignorant and more than likely racist to assume otherwise. but yeah I'm so ****ing obsessed with Yeezus it's actually not even funny. It's honestly one of my top ten. I just think it's nearly perfect and it's been my go to album all summer. I honestly haven't felt like listening to much else. |

That is a good point about Skinheads, i know Ska is a kind of cousin to Punk, i guess skinheads to me are just American History X typa cats. And yes, it is whack to alienate and be "punk" since being alienated is the reason for being punk in the traditional sense anyway (sum 41 blew though and i can't see them being alienated for anything beyond that fact). I also agree with the Rap/Punk ethos as stated earlier, and Yeezus is pretty straight minus Kanye West personally, but I've mentioned that.

American History X isn't a good indicator of skinheads. Idk if you've ever seen it, but the movie This is England is closer to it, although Combo goes radical. |
