Shit this is good. 5/5. Bravo, Josh.

Janszoon 05-15-2013 10:17 PM

Was the cover done by the same illustrator who did the cover of The Money Store? The style seems similar.

No. The illustrator for The Money Store was Sua Yoo, while Boneface did the artwork for QOTSA.

Ah. Thanks! I'm glad someone knew the answer to that!

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-16-2013 11:55 AM

The last one they did that I liked had a red cover so i'm hopeful.

it also had black, as well

George Costanza sums it up:

"It just didn't work out. What can I do? I wanted to love her. I tried to love her. I couldn't."

Mojo 06-04-2013 02:38 AM

I listened to the iTunes stream of it and wasn't exactly overwhelmed by it. I liked the single and another couple of tracks.

I bought it yesterday and gave it a second listen today and I'm struggling to understand how I could feel that way. I think it's brilliant. Makes me very excited to see them again. Less than two weeks now.

14232949 06-04-2013 03:50 AM

I too will say that I thought it was really good. their best since Songs for the Deaf.

sidewinder 06-04-2013 11:41 AM

First time listening now, I'm liking it but I'm not blown away (didn't expect to be). Definitely better than Era Vulgaris, but I'll have to play it a few more times to see if I like it more than Lullabies to Paralyze. I'm not sure how I feel about the production.

I think I agree. Fairweather Friends is a pretty crap song but the rest are titular, especially Smooth Sailing, Keep Your Eyes Peeled, and My GOd is the Sun

4/5

LoathsomePete 06-04-2013 07:19 PM

I'm just finishing my first play through and I'm feeling like it's definitely a 4/5.

Mojo 06-05-2013 05:06 AM

There hasn't been a QOTSA album I haven't liked to be perfectly honest, but I'm still thinking it may not be crazy to say it's their best since Songs for the Deaf.

Electrophonic Tonic 06-05-2013 12:23 PM

It's a really mellow album and a nice change of pace after the desert-glam rock on Era Vulgaris.

The last two tracks are my favorites and I agree with everyone saying this is the best album since Song for the Deaf. I'd call it a 9/10, so a 5/5 for this thread.

Exo 06-07-2013 11:14 AM

I Appear Missing is a FANTASTIC song. Seriously like the new album. I didn't care much for Era Vulgaris.

TheBig3 06-10-2013 09:57 AM

Really boring on the first run through. It strikes me as being more interested in creating a groove than a song. And I can't put my finger on it, but its weirdly slick. Like what a pot-head album would be like if it went commercial. Its a little too cheery and plastic for me.

Again, first listen. We'll see. I went through this thread and will re-listen to the songs being mentioned as having been the better of the lot.

Hey, can you please send me your copy of this album, I need to get my listen on! :)

Mojo 06-11-2013 04:43 AM

I wouldn't know how to even do such things.

Cheery? CHEERY? Man, this is the feel bad hit of the summer!

sidewinder 06-12-2013 01:34 PM

I'm liking this more and more, though I still feel like I'm more into it for the first half and then my attention fades a bit. I don't know if I just don't like the songs in the second half as much, or if I just get a little bored with the style. Certainly they are not bad and I like the album as a whole. Sitting at a 3.5 rating right now.

Same feeling. Will need to give it repeat listens.

I actually dislike that song quite a bit, it deters me from putting on Rated R sometimes. Shame because it's packed full of great songs.

At least it's short and transitions well into a really good song

duga 06-17-2013 02:52 PM

So it gets better on a second listening? I put this on during a road trip recently and wasn't that impressed. Which is sad. Because I want to be impressed. Arrggh.

I'll give it another shot soon.

Mojo 06-17-2013 03:15 PM

I think it does.

I was rather indifferent on first listen and it may currently be my favourite record of the year so far.

Hm that's odd, I've always found QOTSA (and Kyuss by extension) work better as driving music, especially on road trips. In fact ... Like Clockwork was the album that finally broke my Slim Cessna's Auto Club spell for driving music.

No kidding! When I read that I thought the same thing.

I LOOOOOVE this album. It MIGHT be my favorite QOTSA album ever. "I Sat By The Ocean", "If I Had a Tail", "The Vampyre of Time and Memory" and "Smooth Sailing" are my favorites. Yeah, like, I can't even describe how much I love these songs and this album. Sexy.

So do I! It's by far my least favorite QOTSA song ever.

TheBig3 07-27-2013 03:47 PM

I'm going back through this album currently, and if this hasn't been QotSA I'd have probably liked it off the bat, which is more a statement on my own expectations, and not on the band or the music.

It strikes me as a lot more ambitious, like Tv on the Radio with traditional instruments. (RtCM era). Really enjoying it when i'm in the right mood. Might be fast gaining as one of my favorites. Some of the tracks (I appear missing) even has a Modest Mouse (GNFPWLBN) feel to it. Tracks like Bukowski seem similar.

danilo87 08-05-2013 05:39 AM

Bought the album several months after the release. which was way too late beacuse it is really fantastic.
And am I the only one who thinks of "them crooked vultures" when looking at the cover?

TheBig3 08-05-2013 07:22 AM

Probably. Why does the cover remind you of TCV?

mesh1981 12-13-2013 01:24 PM

Great comeback album

Josh Homme sounds great there

The Universe 02-23-2014 06:11 PM

5/5..Josh Homme is the ****en man

Scobe 03-28-2014 08:30 AM

Hell Yeah!! Love me some QOTSA!!

dca 03-30-2014 09:43 PM

a mere 2/5 from me I'm afraid. I Sat By The Ocean is a decent enough tune, but overall this just falls into the category of 'generic plodding alt-rock' for me. Even in 1995 this would've sounded stale and dated. Bands like Fu Manchu were doing this kind of stuff way better, even back then.
