Just downloaded it from their site.
Looking forward to hearing how much they've changed since 1991. |

I've listened twice now and I feel let down. The albums not bad at all, it just sounds exactly like Loveless, where I was hoping for and expecting some growth and experimentation. How any band could go 21 years between albums and sound exactly the same is beyond me.
Also - what the hell is with "Nothing Is" ? |

Oh my god, its absolutely amazing...
I have been waiting for this and its paying off. I feel like I have fallen into a fuzzy blue vortex of motherly love and electric fuzz. |
I find myself liking this more than I liked Loveless on first listen.
I think the middle of the album is particularly strong. It's a good album, it's just a shame it'll probably get lambasted for the 22 year wait or the inevitable comparisons to Loveless. Blows the crap out of any of the shoegaze revival stuff I've heard over the past couple of years. |
I another way is one of the trippiest songs I have heard in a long time.

This was pretty great from last year. |
God, there's a White House Petition thing asking the Obama administration to make the website work.
|
She Found Now is one I am really enjoying. I am guessing that is Kevin singing.
|
Stayed up last night and downloaded this.. Definitely worth the site-crash! I'm liking it about the same as Loveless. Two tracks that really stand out to me are 'new you' and 'in another way,' although I'm liking all of them. 'nothing is' was a bit weird at first, but after a few more listens and paying more attention to the sound progression it's grown on me.

You can't win, and I'm hoping for the day where artists learn to go "Oh yeah? well tough **** because I enjoyed making this album." Metallica should have kept making hard rock, and Axl Rose should have just made a new band. You cannot win with music fans. They're the biggest ****s in the world. |
Not too bad overall. I understand that some people 'round these parts are obsessed with Loveless in the same way I'm obsessed with 70's Gino Vannelli, but M B V wasn't going to have a chance in hell of ousting that record for any of you. I personally am digging how relaxed it is though. :pimp:

I've posted about it already in their main thread, but I'll just reiterate here that it's a great damn album. I think it shows more growth than people are letting on. They were faced with the challenge any shoegaze band has...how can you really expand on hazy fuzzed out layered-beyond-belief guitar music? Most of what can be done has been done. Their challenge was even harder since they technically kick started the whole thing. So with that, I think they exceeded themselves. It's actually better than I was expecting. They made a really smart move starting off very Loveless-like and then moved on into material that's a bit different. The middle and very end are phenomenal.

Early impressions...
I think there is a lot more repetition, more along the lines of ambient and drone compared to the fairly straight forward song structure on Loveless. Also, this album is a lot softer than Loveless. There is a lot more space on this album and it's not nearly as heavy, even compared to 'Sometimes'. I'd say my favorite track is the opener 'She Found Now' which is pretty much the opposite of my favorite Loveless track, 'Come in Alone'. I wish the album stayed more along the lines of that first track, but I'm pretty amazed at the differences between the songs despite their obviously shoega...ze.......ness. |
Second impression is much better than the first and leads me to believe this album is a grower, and one that requires headphones to really get into. I guess I don't know why I expected the sound to be any different so perhaps I was overly judgemental. I do like how they released the album, let the anticipation just build up, then a silent release that took everybody by surprise.

While I am not a purist in any way, this album is important enough to me that it warrants purchase. I went with the CD+digital download from the band's site. My order got fucked up royally but seems to have been resolved. I even got an apologetic personal email from Ms. Ann Marie Shields along the way of rectifying the problem.
So.. my point is that I have not listened to it in full yet because I am awaiting receipt of my purchase. However, since the songs were put on Youtube in a piddling 192kbps format, I listened to some. I love everything I have heard. To me this album is like getting an Xmas present that I have wanted for years (decades really) but simply couldn't have. I expect to give it the highest praise possible, based on the several songs I have heard. I'll submit a proper vote once I've ingested the thing. |
She found now is my favourite, in another way is up there as is If I am and New You.
|
I give the album whatever the highest poll option is. I even bought the vinyl+CD+dl package. It makes me feel that good. I want to shower the band with my money.
I wrote a review of the thing here. |

So far I'm finding myself whelmed by this album, neither overwhelmed nor underwhelmed. To me it really sounds like something that would have been released in the 90s, which in the long run doesn't matter in terms of the quality of the album, but it does mean this is something that's hard for me to get very excited about right off the bat. That said, this album very well my be a grower for me so I'll be withholding judgement until I give it a few more listens.

Eh. There's some good parts in this, but I feel like it doesn't flow together at all. It feels like they just picked the tapes out of a hat.
|
It's 3 parts... they are supposed to be different.
|
What a terrible name of an album. Your band's initials.

I worded that weird. Sorry. I mean I don't care about those things as much as long as the music is good... :/
You probably knew what I meant anyways. |
2 Attachment(s)
Yo!
Straight Outta Southall Attachment 5131 Attachment 5132 (click the images to make them bigger) Received today. The larger CD package was sent to me (for free) because of an ordering error so now I have the vinyl+CD, and the CD. No record label. No plastic covering. No creative album title. No bullshit. You can't clearly see what the images are because of my crappy phone cam. But the things on the left of the open jacket are brick buildings (the whole thing is some kind of panoramic cityscape shot, maybe) and the blurry image overlaying that is, I think, the band members or some other people. There are more images in the CD insert as well. |

It's a solid record, but I'm gonna have to listen a few more times to give my final verdict. It's gonna be good though.

It was enjoyable, but I haven't heard 'Loveless' yet, so I don't have any sort of comparison to it.
Haven't heard much Shoegaze either, so I'm really not the best critic. |
Well, I know it was mentioned a few times in the thread already, but there is no way in hell "M B V" could have topped "Loveless" in the eyes of the public. The fact that the latter was put on a diamond pedestal and praised by every music publication ever as one of the best albums of the 90's is exactly why it got the reactions it did. I personally loved the new album (I'm really, really digging 'Who Sees You'), and I'm a bit stunned people are lukewarm towards it. By far and large, it was an amazing birthday present from MBV to me. It's a bit of a shame really, as I'm pretty sure Kevin tried to ignore the hype, hence releasing it out of the blue.
It just goes to show though, anything that's hyped up for a decade or two is bound to not live up to said hype. |
