Long since evolved from simply a stoner rock/doom metal band since 2006s Age of Winter, The Sword are back with their fourth album in six years. I had been wondering what it might sound like, as I find it difficult to foresee exactly what direction they are likely to take any more. The first track from the album was made availble to listen to today, however, and first impressions are pretty good.

Hehe I wasn't expecting votes just yet!

The album cover is such a disappointment after the prior three. Still pumped for this nonetheless as I'm often in the mood for straightforward riffage and fantasy-themed lyrics, and in my opinion few fill that niche better than The Sword.

I remember grabbing Warp Riders back in 2010 and I even remember using the song "Tres Brujahs" on my Best of Stoner Rock/Metal 2010 mix, but I don't really remember much about that album. Perhaps it's time I revisit it and see if I should get excited for their new release.

^ Personally, I think "Astraea's Dream" and "Chronomancer II" are the best tracks on Warp Riders. They kick so much ass. I'm excited to hear a live version of the latter on this new album.

I just saw these guys live in OKC last week. It was a pretty stellar show. I really like "Eyes of the Stormwitch." The solo is the best part.

I think this one is my favourite track on it so far, but I can tell thats gonna change a lot over the next few days. Really cool lyrics video too.

I am absolutely loving this album at the moment. I think this is their best effort yet.

Ive seen the Sword twice and at one time owned all their albums.
It seems to me that with each album their spark seems to become dimmer. The band becomes sucked in to mainstream music and has lost their touch with their creative sides that were so prominent in Age of Winters.
With their signature sound beginning to sound stale I've moved on to other stoner rock bands.
There is a delightful band out of the United States called Egypt. They just released their full length debut titled Become The Sun. On that album they do an amazing cover of Deep Purple's Black Night
Another good stoner rock band that has made its way in to my collection is a small band out of Norway called Svolk. They have been cited in creating their own genre entitled "bear metal", a mixture of stoner, metal, and a Nordic redneck attitude.
