I think it's better than his first release in production, but I need more time to go through and listen to the lyrics again.

Best album of 2011 thus far.

I was really impressed with the three tracks that came out/leaked before the whole album leaked (Yonkers, Sandwitches, Tron Cat), and I wouldn't be surprised if Yonkers ends up being my favourite song of the year.
Goblin is easliy my favourite track out of the "new" ones. Amazing lyrics. Haunting production too. Nightmare and Golden are right up there too for the same reasons. The back-and-forth with the therapist on Golden in particular is awesome. I thought the production was really good too, Transylvania (Left Brain) and She in particular, although I wouldn't say it's a major upgrade over Bastard if at all. The thing is that the second half isn't nearly as good as the first half, and there are a few filler songs in there. With a 75 minute album that can be expected though. Overall, great album. |
It's pretty good i think.
However, tyler is still only capable of making one kind of song, really basy hardcore headbanger, whenever he's trying something else it doesn't quite work. I don't think it's really that experimental,he sticks with the same monotone interviewer guy, which is really played out by the end of the album. Too many of the songs are just tyler rapping in a deeper voice, which is like the only thing production wise he doesnt have to do. But radicals and tron cat, sandwitches, all have a really strong punk rock edge to them, and they're just so much better to listen to. I'd love a shorter album thats just that, similiar to one day as a lion or something Also an appearance by Earl would have been clutch, because all the odd future guest spots were pretty weak, just nowhere near tyler. |
I liked "Golden" and "Yonkers" on first listen (well, I've heard "Yonkers" before). Otherwise I felt like it seemed too lightweight, sonically, for my tastes.

Also, 20yo's shouldn't release 75m albums. |

I thought the track with Frank Ocean was great....Window, not so much. And yeah, it is really weird hearing an OF album without Earl, but I don't think it hurts the album.

I'm also digging "Radicals".

Not his finest production, lyrics or anything technically, just has some really good energy and i wanna see it performed live. <3 the "i aint got no mutha****ing daddy!" |
Tron Cat > Rest of the album, in my opinion.
Album wasn't absolutely amazing, but I did think it was great. |
Who is this guy? Where did he come from and which is the title of this album? Tyler, the Creator? or Goblin?
|
^ the albums called Goblin, Tyler's the rapper. Currently my favorite songs are Nightmare and Golden.

Ugh Thom Yorke what are we gonna do with you. :bonkhead: |
I voted great, based on whats come this year at least. Its a good album in the context of hip hop as a whole, but this is one of the best in recent times. I like the stripped down beats he uses and how brutal some of his lyrics are in how he doesnt hold back in what he talks about, some of his stuff is quite depressing really, and the fact that the beats are so minimal just brings more attention to what he's saying.

It's almost painful seeing this get positive reviews.
|
Great album, but the hyped has meant that it will never satisfy people unfortunately

Refreshingly gritty rap, maybe we're finally moving on from that southern "crunk" **** that's plagued the mainstream for too long! |
I think Crunk has been extinct for a few years now. Nowadays, I'd say we're on more Fab/Faux Drug Rap.

Surely you don't think Cudi is worse then them? |

Cudi and Wiz are both gimmicks with no real knack for music. |

Cudi's not bad, I could do without Wiz though. |
Oh my fault.
Can you really call Odd future mainstream? They are certainly popular, but in no way radio friendly. Your not going to see a young money ft tyler the creator song or anything. Should be interesting to see where they go from here on out. |

They aren't radio friendly but I'm pretty sure you'll see Tyler feature up with some mainstream artists in the near future. |
Also, to help their whole "We're not homophobic" thing, isn't Syd a lesbian or something?

i voted great. this was definitely a big step up from Bastard production wise, and even if some of the lyrics falter, there's definitely some memorable verses to be had on here. that, and i loved how much Tyler really bares all as well as the progression of the concept the first, especially at the end where
Spoiler for Goblin and Bastard link:
overall, i'd say this is a real grower. it might take some time for it to stick, but when it does, it's a really memorable release, especially for hip-hop. and no i wouldn't call them mainstream, not with how their rhymes and production is. and with how tight knit they are as a collective, i doubt that they'd so easily sign on to feature on songs with people they aren't already cool with. |
frank ocean is cool

they are weird though

when did it become socially acceptable to say you rape women

I actually really like this album. A lot of people are complaining about how crappy the production is, but the lo-fi used sounds pretty good to me and fits his lyrics well. I thought it was okay at first, but then it grew on me. Definatley one of the best 2011 has to offer so far.

After finally listening, i consider this an overall upgrade from Bastard. While Bastard had it strengths, it felt a little repeated to me after awhile, but here i find the ideas touched on before (rape kill hate) put into fresher ways. However, there were times where Tyler should have just stopped [all the slack on Radicals, Fish got old quick, Analog, the slightly odd placement of AU79, Goblin especially didn't bring the strength of Bastard (the tracks, i mean, but Tyler is even aware of this)]. Overall though, i was thoroughly impressed and found it an upgrade from his previous release. I love that the storyline started to shine through by the middle of the album, too. My highlights would be:
Transylvania Yonkers Window She BTW: I rated great for the reasons above. Even the worst moments weren't awful, just unnecessary. |
