The music with Bon Iver seems too dependant on atmosphere and the fundamentals of good songwriting like good melody and harmonic structure aren't really as evident as with Fleet Foxes. And as for whether he has an incredible voice or not that is purely a matter of opinion, quite a few people think his voice is nothing special.

This album is alot more personal as the EP and the debut were more storytelling. Montezuma, Helplessness Blues and Grown Ocean really stick out for me and it seems to me the whole album is a build up to those songs. That being said nothing really sticks out for me besides those songs.
Though "Helplessness Blues" is prop my fave song of the year. 7.5/10 |

I tried to like this album and while the musicianship is excellent the songwriting is lacking. Every time I put this album on it just kind of fades into the background. The whole thing seems to lack the ability to grab me emotionally or viscerally it just feels.... bland.

Ok so having finally listened to the whole album a few times, I think it's really good, Pecknold is a naturual lyricist and effortless songwriter and can really set a song up well; he's probably one of the strongest songwriters in his scene that i'm aware of right now. I don't consider it a masterpiece like I do Grizzly Bear's newest album, maybe because the folk-centrism kind of limits it for me (though it has its own sense of folkiness aside from the usual brand), or because it's so personal it doesn't show the same kind of ambition (however, it definitely has its own ambitions). The cohesion isn't always the best, it is there, but i dunno, it moves a little funny for me sometimes.
So I'd give it about a 4. Or great for this thread.

I can dig that, I feel like many may have discredited Shields for pretension, though i may be wrong. I personally didn't hear a lot about it from the community, mainly critic adoration. What would you consider better in this album?
