"Venus in Furs" - 6:22 3. "Night Child" - 8:02 4. "Patterns of Evil" - 6:30 5. "Satyr IX" - 9:58 6. "Turn Off Your Mind" - 5:51 7. "Scorpio Curse" - 7:31 8. "Crypt of Drugula" - 8:49 2007s Witchcult Today was considered by many to be Electric Wizards true return to form and seemed to have more in common with the bands earlier material than it did 2002s Let Us Prey or 2004s We Live. With a new bass player joining the Wizard ranks, after several line-up changes since the bands "golden" era, do they still have anything left in the tank? Two tracks from the record have been available to stream for free on the bands Myspace for a week or so now, although only one still remains. |
"Venus in Furs" is currently my favorite song off the album. I'm not the biggest Electric Wizard fan, but they are one of the older stoner metal bands so the fact that they still have it even after all these years makes me happy.

Electric Wizard are one of my favourite bands and probably the band I enjoy most from this genre. I can't really evaluate this yet as i've had a quick listen on my iPod but I aim to give it more of my time tomorrow. I've been looking forward to it a lot.
|
So far I've listened to it three times, once on my computer and twice on my Zune. I think it's a very well done album and probably the best stoner metal album of the year, but it falls short of being in the same league as Dopethrone.
|
Dopethrone is my favourite of theirs too. That along with Come My Fanatics and Supercoven is their best work and for me, Witchcult is the most solid record since. So yeah, i'm looking forward to seeing how it compares.

I listened to it again today on my computer and I'm sticking with my original vote, it's a very good album and the song "Venus in Furs" is one of the most memorable songs I've heard in a long time, it really gets into your head. That said though the rest of the album doesn't not really surpass the pure brilliance of that song and just kind of floats around for the rest of the work. It's still a very digestible album, but it does blow its load a little too early.
|
I dig it Electric Wizard did a very good job. There sound sounds a little bit more stripped down and clean, but it's not very noticeable. Nowhere near on par with Dopesmoker then again nothing is.
|
It's not on par with Dopethrone and Come My Fanatics, i agree. I wasn't expecting it to be though. I do however feel it's their strongest release since. I may change my mind in time but I think it's very, very solid.

You say that every time Rezz. You must have told me about, oh, a million times that you had no idea I liked doom or stoner rock.
Must be all the weed man. ;) |

If you dont listen to them already try Acid King, there similar imo to EW. Iv been indulging in III and Bussie Woods lately. |
I only have Zoroaster. I probably should check out some more of their records. You are also the only person I have seen (maybe the only one who actually has) posted about Pharaoh Overlord.
|
I finally got a chance to sit down and give Black Masses a good listen the other day and I have to say that it's not really what I was expecting. I sort of thought it would be more of a follow up to Witchcult Today but it actually reminds me more of a cross between We Live and Dopethrone. Not a bad thing at all--in fact I really like Black Masses--it's just not the path I thought they'd take.
