This is a delight. Patton covers 50/60s Italian popular songs (including one Ennio Morricone theme and a galloping, heavier offering by garage band the Blackmen) with a live orchestra. Listened to it several times through and the only part that bothers me is some of the uneven vocal mixing on one of the tracks in the middle, forget the title. Oh and it's way too short considering how long he's been sitting on this record, and how many tracks were professionally filmed (see above link): 11 songs.
Not for everybody perhaps but if you've taken a leap of faith with Patton's stylistic U-turns before and been richly rewarded, this should povide a similarly revelatory experience. More comments when I can be bothered. Sticking with a *strong* 'very good' on this, simply 'cause there ain't enough of it. Came along just as I was thinking of learning Italian too. |

Wonderful covers and arrangement from a guy who never seems to stand still for too long. I'm voting excellent.

Wow coincidentally I was listening to Mr. Bungle radio on Last.fm and Ore D'amore came on, I was thinking... "Mondo Cane.... this sounds familiar" then I remembered this thread lol. Unfortunately I created another thread before i remember this one.

Very good...I got this right at its release and it's a good album. I think I'm a little disappointed with the quality considering how much I have loved some past Patton works (maybe I'm just wanting more Mr. Bungle), but it's still pretty good. At least it's good to see that he's still being different and hasn't stagnated yet.

I have to give this an "average" score. Mike Patton is and has been one of my favorite singers since around 1990, but not all of his stuff is brilliant of course. I was really looking forward to this album, even though the live recordings I heard before didn't blow me away all that much. I just feel like there's something missing here, there's not enough Patton in it. He could have done something truly unique and ****ed up with this, but instead he just sings the songs (for the most part). And sometimes I get the feeling he's oversinging. There was a time I wished to hear Mike Patton sing anything, because I loved his voice so much. But this album makes me realize there needs to be something interesting going on behind the voice for me to really like it. And here there really isn't. The songs sound too similar as well. There just isn't much creativity here at all. It's not bad mind you, there are much worse things I could be listening to. It's enjoyable. It just lacks something that will make me come back for more on a regular basis.
