It would be a wonderful album if it wasn't so damn overproduced and every song wasn't structured out like a single....
He sounds miserable for most of the album. I think Eminem makes the best music when he's pissed off but hopeless depression suits him fine. The lyrics are a little quirky, and even when he seems too depressed to crack jokes, he's cracking them. A few of the songs are absolutely terrible ("Cinderella Man") and on a couple of the tracks, I think he just gave up halfway through, but it has its moments. Favorite track: |

As far as his writing goes? He's still cheesy as all hell. Oh, and I disagree with the idea that it takes sobriety in order to write thoughtful raps. |

Uh, it's like
"Sorry for Encore, I was on drugs. Oh, and sorry for Relapse, I was flushin' em out. But now I'm back and I'm sober and I won't let you guys down!" And I don't know how people feel about Eminem's writing drugged vs. sober. I'm just saying thoughtfulness doesn't dwell exclusively in sobriety. |
This is no Marshall Mathers LP, but it's still a pretty strong album and the best he's made in a while. However, I cannot stand Lil Wayne's rapping and it completely ruins the song he's on for me.

Well, after listening to the album all the way through a couple of times, I voted decent. I was deciding whether to vote good or decent, and then I told myself to be a critic. Anyways, I have to say, while a good third of the album is filler, the rest ain't bad. My personal highlights were the first three songs, Going Through Changes, and 25 To Life. I had a fantastic first impression of Not Afraid, but it never hit me anywhere near that hard again.

I've never really been a fan and when I decided to give the single "Not Afraid" a genuine chance I found it really lackluster and generic. Is this true for the rest of the album, because at the moment I'm really not motivated to listen to it.
