I actually really like it on first listen. Of course, I'm one of the few people (from the reviews I've read) who didn't throw their copy of The Distant and Mechanised Glow of Eastern European Dance Parties EP out the window in disgust...

Yeah Mountainhead is facemeltingly awesome, Crash Tactics is a lot better than I remember it being when I listened to it a few weeks ago (could have been the quality), Come To Me is just awesome with Robert Smith, and Debutante and Tiger Girl are just epic. Very good indeed.

After their abominable EP from last year where they went purely Electronic I have not wanted to give the album a listen, which is a shame because their early stuff kicks ass. Is it a return to their roots and worth a listen?

Sort of (it's not as purely electronic as you describe, some of the mathiness is back), but if you really hated the EP I'd hesitate to recommend this one to you. I'd listen to the first 2 songs or so, that should give you a pretty good idea of whether you'll like the rest of the album or not (especially Mountainhead).
Tiger Girl is a pretty good Fuck Buttons imitation though.

Check out Three Trapped Tigers...they remind me a good bit of 65daysofstatic before they went cheesy electronic, plus Tortoise's more recent sound.
