Iggy Pop: Preliminaires
1. Les feuilles mortes 2. I Want to Go to the Beach 3. King of The Dogs 4. Je sais que tu sais 5. Spanish Coast 6. Nice to Be Dead 7. How Insensitive 8. Party Time 9. He's Dead / She's Alive 10. A Machine for Loving 11. She's a Business 12. Les feuilles mortes (Marc's Theme) Iggy's new album here. It actually came out in June and I wish I'd been aware of it when it did, as it would've made an awesome birthday present. I'd tell you what kinda music you're dealing with here but, for now, I'm gonna let Iggy do the talking for me... Basically, I think this album's bloody fantastic and definitely in the mix for album of the year. Nevermind Pissfork's 5.4/10 rating of it, not that anyone here takes their word for gospel (I hope). To go into detail would be a bit much for an OP, so I won't bother for now. A few favourites of mine from the album to give you a taste of it... So, yeah, I recommend it. |

it's just as well this didnt end up being the soundtrack to the film of the book, apparently it is absolutely terrible. I love Iggy's total ineptness with the youtube thing, it reminds you how old he is as do the quieter songs on this album (however there are a couple of rockers present and the excellent 'King of the Dogs' is lively N'Orleans)...
i think about the time he did those insurance ads that screened in the UK (these were banned by trading standards after it surfaced that they didn't insure musicians), i was ranting and raving about how i'd never be able to listen to a new Iggy Pop record seriously; there is footage of a frank interview about that whole thing which made sense once the initial indignant fury subsided, plus he has been practically making a living off his songs being used in adverts forever now. i thought you might dig this Alex, certain songs have a very Cohen-y vibe about them and 'king of the dogs' could be a tom waits effort, as could the dusty blues of 'he's dead, she's alive'. There are some touches of electronics aswell (e.g. 'partytime') that are not utter fail, all in all it's possibly the most eclectic album he has ever done and worth more than a paltry 5.4 (how ridiculous is the decimal point scoring system? why not a 5.3?) |

I really like some of the more lounge oriented material on Preliminaries. Iggy has a far better song stylist and ballad singer than most folks give him credit for. You can hear Iggy the Crooner on How Insensitive, Les feuilles mortes, I Want to Go To the Beach, and Spanish Coast. Granted, Iggy is no Frank Sinatra, but he gives Jim Morrisson a good run for the money as a balladeer.
All things considered it's the most consistent studio effort in several years from one of rock music's most notoriously erratic artists. It's one of the most notable albums of 2009 and I hope more people give it a listen. |
