The more I listen to this album the more I appreciate Yoni's efforts to strip down his music a bit, Eskimo Snow is a bare bones and honest album, and I don't think it should be rated poorly because it doesn't exactly represent his usual style of making music. Not to say this album completely strays from the Why? label though, there's plenty of off the cuff lyrics and the familiar psych-folk feel of Elephant Eyelash. I don't want to go as far as calling it excellent but it's better than I feel most will give it credit for because Alopecia is so hard to top.

Ouch... I'm the only one to vote. Which is sad, because Why? makes some interesting stuff and this departure is, in my opinion, better than what we've seen from him so far. I really liked this though, I think you can figure out what I voted for.

If you can't tell, I'm a huge fan.. but Eskimo Snow the best they've done? I just don't see it. I'll admit it's grown on me like a bitch but it still doesn't hold up to the other albums. There are some quailty tracks on this album though.. Into The Shadows Of My Embrace is amazing.

I voted 'good'. To be honest I have been putting off this one because I'm scared to dislike one of my old favorites. So, anyway, I figured out what needed to be done: stop thinking of Yoni as a rapper and stop thinking of WHY? as a hip-hop group. When I saw them play in '06 it was already apparent that Yoni fronts an indie-rock band so I've known for a while that I've gotta get down with that. So now I'm down and I'm ready to admit that WHY? is a damn good indie-rock band and this is definitely a good album.

I went with good, if there was something between good and excellent I would have went with that. I think out of all his albums this takes the longest to grow, the pared down dreamy-ness creates less chances for hooks. But some of the songs are just beautiful once they sink in.
His lyricism is still razor sharp, even if I haven't actually obsessed over it (yet) like I did with Alopecia, he's still got that depressed wit and surreal imagery. Last edited by Fruitonica; 09-01-2009 at 05:47 AM. |

^great great album. i voted for excellent although i agree that it really falls somewhere between good and excellent. great move from hip-hop to indie rock and i can really appreciate it because though we see a shift in genres from the awesome Alopecia Yoni continues to do his music justice and release damn good stuff. top 3 of the year so far.
