Eskimo Snow : WHY?
WHY? - Eskimo Snow Anticon These Hands January Twenty Something Against Me Even The Good Wood Gone Into The Shadows Of My Embrace One Rose On Rose Walk, Insomniac Berkeley By Hearseback This Blackest Purse Eskimo Snow |
The more I listen to this album the more I appreciate Yoni's efforts to strip down his music a bit, Eskimo Snow is a bare bones and honest album, and I don't think it should be rated poorly because it doesn't exactly represent his usual style of making music. Not to say this album completely strays from the Why? label though, there's plenty of off the cuff lyrics and the familiar psych-folk feel of Elephant Eyelash. I don't want to go as far as calling it excellent but it's better than I feel most will give it credit for because Alopecia is so hard to top.

Ouch... I'm the only one to vote. Which is sad, because Why? makes some interesting stuff and this departure is, in my opinion, better than what we've seen from him so far. I really liked this though, I think you can figure out what I voted for.

I voted 'good'. To be honest I have been putting off this one because I'm scared to dislike one of my old favorites. So, anyway, I figured out what needed to be done: stop thinking of Yoni as a rapper and stop thinking of WHY? as a hip-hop group. When I saw them play in '06 it was already apparent that Yoni fronts an indie-rock band so I've known for a while that I've gotta get down with that. So now I'm down and I'm ready to admit that WHY? is a damn good indie-rock band and this is definitely a good album.

I went with good, if there was something between good and excellent I would have went with that. I think out of all his albums this takes the longest to grow, the pared down dreamy-ness creates less chances for hooks. But some of the songs are just beautiful once they sink in.
His lyricism is still razor sharp, even if I haven't actually obsessed over it (yet) like I did with Alopecia, he's still got that depressed wit and surreal imagery. |
^great great album. i voted for excellent although i agree that it really falls somewhere between good and excellent. great move from hip-hop to indie rock and i can really appreciate it because though we see a shift in genres from the awesome Alopecia Yoni continues to do his music justice and release damn good stuff. top 3 of the year so far.

I honestly liked it better than Alopecia, because they kind of went back to the sound in Elephant Eyelash, which is pretty much a perfect album. It definatley deserves at least a 'good'
|
Y'know, when I went to vote I was looking for a 'Very Good' so mine should count as yet another vote for 'between Good and Excellent'.

Elephant Eyelash does something the later albums fail to achieve I think, sitting there listening to the lyrics you can't help but feel like you're Yoni's best friend.. I feel very, I dunno, 'involved' with the music when I'm listening to it, it really draws you in and keeps you hooked.. of course that applies to some of the other albums but there's no way I can bring something like Oaklandazulasylum into the picture because that album is in a league of its own. Sorry, my polling abilities fail. |

awesome Yoni made music video for Afterschool America (see if you can spot Fog from the Hymie's Basment collab too ;)) : |
Wow that song is amazing. I'm getting that album.

My first exposure to this band was the album Alopecia which I'm still struggling to like. It's not that I didn't like it, but it just didn't wow me. There were some songs on it that I really liked so I decided to keep it and let it grow on me (Like what I've done with Immortal Technique and Nile). Eskimo Snow I've found already is a far more accessible and enjoyable album, enough to make me think about checking out this group's discography again. So yeah I'd say this is a good album :)

I just tapped into Elephant Eyelash- which is ****ing amazing. Alopecia never quite lived up to what I'd heard about it... It was good, but I prefer the stuff, er- less hip hop?- don't know how to describe it. The bridge in 'The Hoofs' has me hooked.

Eskimo Snow has been growing on me lately, partly I think, because I've been listening to it backwards and Eskimo Snow+This Blackest Purse is a crazy awesome opening to the album.
i wanna speak at an intimate decibel with the precision of an infinite decimal This rhyme is Yoni's hip hop pedigree showing, and the fact that it comes in the middle of some mournful piano pop only makes it sweeter. |
